Abstract

Microorganisms are the main causative agents on the development of apical periodontitis. Microorganisms infecting the root canal system are colonized in communities as biofilm. These bacterial communities show distinct pattern related to the different forms of apical periodontitis which are determined by species richness and abundance. Objective: This study is aimed to examine the root canal microorganisms on upper anterior teeth of asymptomatic apical periodontitis and chronic apical abscess. Methods: Samples were collected from patients referred to Endodontic Department of Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital from July 2013 to September 2013. Twenty two samples, aged 17-40 were collected from 16 patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis, and 36 samples, aged 18-50 were collected from 36 patients with chronic apical abscess. Microorganisms were evaluated using cultural technique. Results: The results showed predominant bacteria in asymptomatic apical periodontitis is Porphyromonas spp while in chronic apical abscess both Streptococcus spp and Porphyromonasspp showed similar frequencies. This study showed Porphyromonas spp plays dominant role in apical periodontitis either in asymptomatic apical periodontitis or chronic apical abscess. Conclusion:This study showed different composition of bacteria within different apical periodontitis and Porphyromonas spp is the most prevalent bacteria found in both asymptomatic apical periodontitis and chronic apical abscess.

Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliance produces structural and biochemical changes and breaking the balance between the synthesis and the breakdown of the collagen in the periodontium. Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) plays an important role in the remodeling of periodontal ligament during orthodontic movement. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the expression of MMP-8 gene in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of fixed orthodontic patients. It is expexted that the result can be used as a reference to decide the proper time for elastomeric chain to be reactivated. Methods: Orthodontic fixed appliances were placed on 8 patients and elastomeric chains exerting 75 grams were attached to produce canine distalization. GCF samples were collected from the distal side of upper canines before force application, 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4 weeks after application consecutively. The samples were analyzed by using RT-PCR. Statistical analyses used were univariate analysis and Mann-WhitneyU test. Results: The expression of MMP-8 in the GCF at t0 was 31.3% but the force application elevated its expression to 65.6% at t1, and then decreased continously at t2, t3, and t4. There was no statistically significant difference of MMP-8 gene expression between t0 and t3. Conclusion: The highest level of MMP-8 gene expression due to orthodontic forces was occured in the first week, but it declined continously in the following weeks. The proper time to reactivate an elastomeric chain was 3 weeks after application.

Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion is a dental health problem that has a high prevalence rate. According to WHO, the periodic ranking is below dental caries and periodontal disease. The prevalence in Indonesia reaches 80%. Orthodontic treatment requires intensive time to control every month. This is an obstacle forcertain patients who have busy schedules and great distances from the clinic to the dentist clinic. In this context, orthodontics was invited to go forward using tele-orthodontic devices which is a term used for long-distance orthodontic treatment through information technology media, not through direct contact with individual contacts. Objective: To examine more deeply about tele-orthodontics as a solution in the treatment of malocclusion. Discussion: Dental MonitoringTM is a software-based program that enables practitioners to monitor the development of patient care remotely. Another advantage is closer management through remote monitoring, saving time, transportation costs, and increasing patient comfort. Conclusion: Tele-orthodontics can be used as a current solution to treatment for malocclusion.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment that takes a long time carries a large risk of complications such as caries or root resorption. Various surgical and nonsurgical interventions have been performed, but non-surgical interventions are currently not widely accepted by orthodontists. Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) is a form of non-invasive technology that has been used in the medical field for more than six decades. In the field of dentistry, LIPUS stimulation has been studied, among others, to improve bone remodelling, regeneration of cementum, gingiva and periodontal ligament. This article aims to review the mechanism of LIPUS in orthodontic tooth movement. This review is expected to become a clinical practice guide to shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment using LIPUS in the future.

Abstract

Anterior crossbite is a condition that occurs due to discrepancy between the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in occlusion which the maxillary teeth are more lingual than the mandibular teeth. Anterior crossbite often occurs in children in the mixed dentition phase, so treatment is needed as early as possible to eliminate the causes of malocclusion and the need for more com-plex orthodontic treatment. There are various treatments for anterior crossbite, one of them is the inclined bite plane. This litera-ture review aims to determine the treatment of anterior crossbite with inclined bite plane and the factors that influence the duration of treatment. The method used is to collect literature from search engines such as Pubmed, Scielo, Google Scholar, Science Di-rect, Elsevier, Ajodo.org which discusses the treatment of anterior crossbite with inclined bite plane, then reviewed. From the results of the journal search, 7 literatures relevant to the topic were obtained. From the results of the literature review, it can be concluded that the treatment of anterior crossbite with inclined bite plane is quite effective. The factors that influence the du-ration of treatment are motivation, cooperation, and the type of inclined bite plane that used by the patient.

Abstract

Malocclusion is an occlusion that deviates from normal conditions, there is irregularity tooth or incorrect placement of dental arches outside the normal curve. Malocclusion can be caused by various factors, such as sucking habit. Sucking habit is divided into nutritive sucking habit and non-nutritive sucking habit. This literature review is aimed to describe the roles of nutritive and non-nutritive sucking habit on malocclusion. Eleven articles were obtained through articles search engines such as Google Scho-lar and PubMed. From the literature search, it was found that breast feeding and bottle feeding do not cause malocclusion, but several studies stated that bottle feeding can cause malocclusion. Meanwhile, finger sucking and pacifying are considered to cause malocclusion. Nutritive sucking habit and non-nutritive sucking habit are also related, children who do not breastfeed di-rectly from their mother or breastfeed less than 6 months are more likely to use pacifier or suck their fingers.
