Abstract

This research entitled “Correlation between Students’ Self-Confidence and Their Academic Achievement in Speaking III Course. The problem statement of this research was is there any significant correlation between students’ self-confidence and their academic achievement in the speaking III course. The objective of this research was to find out significant correlation between students’ self-confidence and their academic achievement in the speaking III course of the third semester at Lakidende Unaaha University. This research was a quantitative research that using a correlation design. The result of the research was the students of Lakidende Unaaha University had mean score of self-confidence high with score 81.10 % and mean score of academic achievement was high with score 81.75 %. Furthermore, the coefficient correlation rxy = 0.705. It meant that, the correlation was high (there was correlation).

Abstract

The research was conducted to identify the errors are made by the eleventh grade of IPA students at Madrasah Aliyah Al Ikhlas Amberi in writing descriptive text by using simple present. The objective of the research is to find out the type of errors made in writing descriptive text by using simple present. This research applied descriptive qualitative research method by using Surface Strategy Taxonomy to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that the total of errors were 279 errors. The proportions (frequency and percentage) of the students’ error in writing descriptive text by using simple present was, students made errors in omission type were 27 students with 74 errors or 26,52% of errors, students made errors in addition type were 19 students with 37 errors or 13,26 % of errors, students made errors misformation type were 30 students with 142 errors or 51,00 % of errors, and students made errors in misordering type were17 students with 26 errors or 9,31 % of errors. From the data above, it could be concluded that misformation type was the highest number of errors made by the students and misordering type was the lowest number of errors made by the students.

Abstract

This research analyzes the transitivity process by analyzing the third semester English Education Department students’ descriptive writing at Lakidende Unaaha University. The objectives of the research are to find out the students’ using of the transitivity process and to find out the most dominant of transitivity process in the descriptive writing. The subject of the research was nine students. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data was analyzed by Halliday’s theory. In the research, it was found 153 clauses in the six transitivity processes. Material process got 25 times or 16.34 %, mental process obtained 25 times or 16.34 %, relational process was 91 times or 59.48%, behavioral process occurred 8 times or 5.22%, verbal process obtained 1 time or 0.65%, and existential process was 3 times or 1.97%. from the result of analyzing of the transitivity process of the third semester English Education Department students’ descriptive writing at Lakidende Unaaha University, it can be conclude that, students uses six transitivity processes in writing descriptive text. The most dominat is relational process and the lowest is verbal process.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan kosakata siswa melalui media gambar pada siswa kelas VII SMPN 1 Tongauna. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Peneliti bertindak sebagai guru dan guru bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 1 Tongauna bertindak sebagai pengamat. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua siklus yang terdiri dari empat langkah yaitu perencanaan, tindakan, observasi dan refleksi. Objek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII yang terdiri dari 26 siswa, 11 siswa laki-laki dan 15 siswa perempuan. Data dikumpulkan melalui empat instrumen penelitian: tes kosakata, lembar observasi, dan catatan lapangan. Hasil analisis data dibandingkan dengan kriteria keberhasilan yang ditetapkan dalam penelitian untuk mengetahui apakah siswa meningkat atau tidak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah agar siswa memahami kosa kata yang dibuktikan dengan fakta bahwa sebagian besar dari mereka mendapat skor standar minimal 70. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa gambar sebagai media yang digunakan untuk mengajarkan kosa kata dapat meningkatkan keterampilan kosa kata siswa. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Tongauna mencapai target pada siklus II. Artinya, Kosa Kata Siswa yang difokuskan kepada Noun dapat ditingkatkan dengan menggunakan media gambar. Data kuantitatif pada observasi awal adalah siswa yang mendapatkan nilai standar ? 70 sebanyak 4 siswa dengan jumlah nilai 1306 atau 15,38%. Pada siklus I terdapat 11 siswa yang mendapat nilai standar ? 70 dengan total nilai 1639 atau 42,30%. Ini berarti, nilai siswa pada siklus I belum memenuhi standar indikator keberhasilan. Kemudian peneliti melanjutkan penelitian pada siklus II untuk memperoleh standar indikator keberhasilan. Pada siklus II terdapat 22 siswa yang memperoleh nilai standar ? 70 dengan jumlah nilai 1921 atau 76,92%. Ini berarti mereka mendapatkan standar indikator keberhasilan. Rentang dari siklus 1 ke siklus 2 adalah 30,15%. Kemudian pada post test siswa yang memperoleh skor standar ? 70 sebanyak 22 siswa dengan jumlah skor 2104 atau 84,62%.
