Abstract

The research aimed to track the distribution of in metaphors and explore their ontological function in the abstracts of English research articles in the sub-disciplines of theoretical linguistics and pragmatics. The lack of empirical evidence on the subject had become the inspiration to base the research on a corpus. The corpus consisted of 40 research article abstracts; 20 from Journal of Linguistics and another 20 from Journal of Pragmatics. By using a quantitative method, the results show that theoretical linguistics abstracts are more densely populated with ‘in’ metaphors. However, in terms of in-preposition phrase topic complement variations, they are less varied. Qualitatively, the results confirm a notion proposed by Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) that ‘in’ metaphors function cognitively by providing ontological status to abstract objects. Their existence proves to play an important role in academic texts.

Abstract

Di dalam artikelnya yang berjudul "The Importance of CulturalContext I" (JELL.

Abstract

This study investigates lexical innovations in The maze runner by James Dashner (2010), especially in terms of irregular word-formation techniques. 34 units of lexical innovations were found and classified according to their word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and exclamations. The analysis focuses mainly on the examination of the word-formation processes undergone by the lexical units. The results reveal that four irregular word-formation techniques were used in the coinage of the new lexicon: compounding with left-headedness, compounding with unrecognizable constituent, compounding with irregular combination, and rhyming.

Abstract

Balai Budaya Minomartani (BBM) is a community center of Indonesian culture and arts, which has attracted a good number of domestic and foreign visitors. It is located in Minomartani village in Sleman, Yogyakarta. It has a community radio station on FM 107.9 Mhz. Although the radio is quite popular among the surrounding residents, it has a very limited program and none of them is for the young generation, especially children. This good potential has drawn the attention of the Community Engagement team of the English Department of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada to provide some support in the form of English Lessons radio program. As the targets of the program are children in the community surrounding the center, the lessons make use of mostly fables to be the main teaching materials.
