Abstract

Background: Besides knowledge and clinical skills, nursing students should have professional behavior as an essential component of competences as a side of knowledge and clinical skills. One aspect of professionalism is academic integrity. Lecturer should know about students’ perception of academic integrity and behavior, to make a good way to detect and prevent the deviant behavior. The objective of this study is to describe nursing students’ perception and behavior on academic integrity.Method: Survey was conducted in a nursing school in Yogyakarta. The subject were 230 nursing students who were taken by proportionate stratified random sampling. The data were analyzed with descriptive analysis. Results: There were many deviant or unacceptable behaviors which were not considered as an academic misconduct (by 5.2%-61.3% students). Peer students’ percentage who had done an academic misconduct with 10 of the highest percentage was 50%-82.2% and the behavior ever done by students was 28.7%-68.7%. The intention to do the behavior in the future was 3-38.7%.Conclusion: Perceptions of nursing students on academic integrity varied widely. Many of the actual behaviors were not considered as academic misconduct. Nursing students had different opinions about the behavior that violated academic integrity. Students’ perceptions about the behavior and the behavior of a peer friend were in accordance with the students’ own behavior. Therefore, there is a need for a shared perception between institutions and students about behaviors that violate academic integrity.

Abstract

Background: Earlier data showed that the mean of achievement index at first year students in Environmental Health Polytechnic of Maluku were decreased for the last 3 years, from 2,9 at year 2008, become 2,6 at year 2010. Studentspresence rate in the first semester for science and skills subjects such as basic of environmental health, microbiology, patophysio-anatomy, and health entomology also decreased from 89,09% at 2008 to 77,04% at 2010. Several studies and experts concludes that both quality and quantity of student’s learning are influenced by some factors like achievement motivation, attention, and cognitive process. The decrease on that factors may influence quality and quantity of learning process. The objective of this study is to identify the correlations between achievement motivation and attention to student’s cognitive process at first year students of Environmental Health Polytechnic of Maluku.Method: This was a quantitative study using survey to 80 first year students academic year 2010/2011. It is used modified instrument Archer’s Health Professional Motivation Survey to assess achievement motivation, Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder to assess attention, and Cognitive Processing Inventory to assess cognitive process. Correlation significance between factors analyzed by using Pearson Correlation. Results: There were significant correlations between achievement-motivation oriented to mastery learning and performance towards cognitive process. Attention factor also correlated to the cognitive process. Conclusion: Early stimulations of learning motivation and profession explanation are needed to the first year students. Learning methods that stimulate students engagement are important to improve the quality of student’s learning process.

Abstract

Background: The role of the learning methods is changing from teacher centered learning to student centered learning (SCL). One of the SCL methods is collaborative and cooperative learning. The past twenty years have seen an increase in collaborative and cooperative learning based pedagogies in colleges, but not in community based health education. The aim of this study is to identify the efectivity of collaborative and cooperative learning in community based health educationMethod: This research used quasi experimental non-randomized control group post test design. Respondent of the research are 111 geriatric cadres of Kecamatan Kepanjen and 72 geriatric cadres of Kecamatan Singosari. Results: Data shows that cadre’s knowledge in first training, 30 and 90 days after first training increased in both groups (p<0,001). There is no relationship between individual characteristic (age, education, occupation, time to work as a cadre, training) and increase of knowledge (p>0,05).Conclusion: Collaborative and cooperative method can increase cadre’s knowledge of stroke effectively and maintain memory retention longer than conventional method.

Kata kunci: prestasi akademik, tes akademik, kognitif, predictive validity The admission process at FM SGJU is more emphasis on academic test results, whereas non cognitive factors are still underestimated.
