Abstract

Activated carbon is a carbon with an amorphous structure arranged in a parallel hexagonal ring. In this research, activated carbon has been synthesized from sago waste. The purpose of this research was to synthesize activated carbon with ZnCl2 activator and investigate the effect of ZnCl2 activator concentration on the characteristics of activated carbon. Synthesis of activated carbon was carried out with the following stages: dehydration, carbonization, silica extraction with NaOH and ZnCl2 activation with variations in concentrations of 5, 15 and 20%. The characterization of activated carbon was carried out by analyzing the crystal structure and morphology, which was conducted using a scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffractometer. The characterization results showed that the best activated carbon was synthesized from 15% ZnCl2 activator due to its amorphous structure with a relatively small pore size of 2 µm.

Abstract

In this study, magnesium ferrite was sinthesized from natural iron sand using co-precipitation method. Iron sand material was taken from the north coast of Sarmi Regency, Papua Province. The purpose of this study was to find out whether magnesium ferrite could be synthesized from iron sand directly without preliminary processes into magnetite minerals. Co-precipitation method was applied with a variant of stirring temperature of 30, 50 and 70°C. The crystal structures was characterized using an x-ray diffractometer, while the magnetic properties was characterized using a vibrating sample magnetometer and the morphology of the particle was characterized using a scanning electron microscpe. From the results of characterization, it is known that magnesium ferrite successfully synthesized from iron sand directly without preliminary processes into magnetite minerals. Magnetic properties were obtained from the sample with added of magnesium acetate tetrahedral and stirred at a temperature of 70°C. The x-ray diffracttion pattern showed figure of merit of 0.82, while the magnetic hysterisis curve shows coercivity of 200 Oe and magnetic moment about 11 emu/gr. The mineral has irregular particle sizes that range from 0.5 to 100 microns in size, due to magnetic attraction which promotes agglomeration. This researcher recommends optimization of the synthesis process so that the quality of the magnesium ferrite can be improve.

Abstract

Activated carbon is a powerful adsorption material which mainly used as pollutants adsorption. The adsorption properties own derived from the main functional groups or chemical atoms derived from the activation processes. In this study, the activated carbon was prepared from waste sago and activated using two different chemicals activation agents called phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide. The aim of this study was to identify the surface functional group on waste sago activated carbon produced. The results showed that activated carbon with phosphoric acid activator contained OH, C=C, CO and CH functional groups, while activated carbon with potassium hydroxide activator contained O-H, C≡C, C=C, C-O and C-H functional groups. These results lead to support the recommendations for the development of the application of waste sago activated carbon made as adsorbents in the purification of lead (II) and cadmium (II) wastewater.

Abstract

On this event, smart ball technology  were applied for kicking exercise in Papua United Football Club. Smart ball is a ball which equipped with sensor therefore the users can build an analysis dan make simulation of ball movement which related to improvement of the quality of exercise. From the testimony of participants, we can understand that this technology were effective, especially because the shape of ball is not different from common ball therefore there were no side effects when the players kicking the samrt ball. However the positive points were they can measure the speed, truning point, and ball speed in only 5 to 10 minutes when using smart ball. If the team ccould get those data in advance they can make an evaluation for players. We hope this new technology can help this football club to improve the uality of players. This technique also can be consider as one of the exercise method for football club in Jayapura. Keywords: smart ball technology, football, smart ball, Papua

Abstract

Biobattery is an alternative energy device that uses organic waste without hazardous chemicals. It is further reported that tropical almond (Terminalia catappa L.) is rich in glucose content, making it a potential electrolyte for a biobattery device, although the power performance is not optimal. Therefore, this research aims to improve the performance of biobattery from tropical almond paste with the addition of acetic acid. Biobattery cells were constructed using the galvanic cell method, while the tropical almond paste as an electrolyte was stored in a box container with a volume of 600 cm³, then attached with copper and zinc metal plate as cathode and anode. Five typical devices of biobattery were made with various acid concentrations of 0%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% which were added to the electrolyte. The results showed a significant enhancement of power performance, from 0.25 mW without any acid up to 1.62 mW with acid addition. The biobattery from tropical almond paste added with acetic acid of 20% had the best performance. Based on the results, the characterization of this device had an open cell voltage of 0.93, and the power curve showed a peak value of 1.62 mW at a current of 3.29 mA, with a stable current lasting up to 200 hr.

Abstract

Laundry activities utilizing detergents as cleaning agents generate non-degradable waste, posing environmental and health hazards. Laundry services, or laundries, have experienced rapid growth in Jayapura City, resulting in substantial laundry waste discharge directly into the environment. Activated carbon, with its porous and highly absorptive nature, proves effective to absorb waste particles. This community engagement initiative focuses on providing education and implementing small to medium-scale laundry waste treatment for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. The project collaborates with Zifara Laundry, a laundry business located in Waena, Heram District, Jayapura City. The partner receives essential education on the importance of pre-treating laundry waste before disposal into the environment. The engagement team installs waste filters based on activated carbon, augmented with silica sand, gravel, and cotton filters in each layer. As a result, both the business owner and laundry workers gain a profound understanding of the significance of treating laundry waste before environmental discharge. The waste filters installed by the engagement team on the central laundry waste disposal channel contribute to an improvement in laundry wastewater quality. Turbidity levels decrease from a scale of 150-200 NTU to 1-2 NTU after the installation of activated carbon-based laundry waste filters.
