Abstract

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is classified as the most common type of oral cancer up to 90% of all malignant neoplasm in the oral cavity. Currently, the only treatments for SCC are surgery and/or radiation or chemotherapy, which can cause various side effects. Cogon grass leaves (Imperata cylindrica) have been considered an alternative cancer treatment that may reduce side effects. Imperata cylindrica (I. cylindrica) leaf extract can inhibit cancer cell proliferation and migration by withholding the cell cycle in the gap 1/synthesis (G1/S) and gap 2/mitosis (G2/M) phases. Therefore, the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is decreased and cancer is not progressing. Purpose: The study aims to determine the effect of I. cylindrica leaf extract on the proliferation and migration of human oral squamous carcinoma-3 (HSC-3) cell lines. Methods: This in vitro experimental study was conducted with nine study groups. The treatment group was divided into seven concentrations—640 ppm, 320 ppm, 160 ppm, 80 ppm, 40 ppm, 20 ppm and 10 ppm. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium-bromide (MTT) assay and scratch assay were carried out to assess the effect of I. cylindrica leaf extract on HSC-3 cell proliferation and migration. Results: Ethanol extract of I. cylindrica has a significant effect compared to the negative control towards the proliferation and migration of HSC-3 cells. Conclusion: This study shows that I. cylindrica ethanol leaf extract can inhibit proliferation and migration of HSC-3 cells.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Handwashing is among the best practices to prevent the transmission of various diseases especially during the pandemic. Handwashing with soap can reduce respiratory tract infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) released guidelines for making homemade hand sanitizer. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of antibacterial hand- rub, as recommended by WHO, containing ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and glycerol in varying concentrations against bacteria and fungus. Methods: This experimental laboratory study was designed to assay the efficacy of hand sanitizer ingredients—96% ethanol, 3% hydrogen peroxide, and 98% glycerol, as recommended by WHO—against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Commercial hand rubs were used in this study for comparison. Result: Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing showed that the WHO hand rub at 25% concentration inhibited E. coli and S. aureus growth, while 12,5% concentration inhibited C. albicans. Conclusion: The WHO-recommended homemade hand sanitizer containing ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and glycerol at a concentration of 50% is effective in eliminating Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and concentration of 25% is effective on Candida albicans. Further study is needed to analyse these materials against other bacteria and viruses.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral cancer has one of the highest death rates of all cancer types due to lack of treatment. Persea americana leaves consist of phenolic compounds that are known to have anticancer effects to inhibit the proliferation of human squamous carcinoma (HSC-3) cell lines. Ethanol extracts from P. americana leaves can inhibit the cell cycle in the G1/S and G2/M phases to give the cells time to repair damaged DNA. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol extracts from P. americana leaves on HSC-3 proliferation. Methods: This study was conducted using experimental research and in vitro laboratory testing. Groups of extract consisted of four concentrations (100%, 50%, 25%, and 10%). Cytotoxic activity of the extracts was measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Result: P. americana leave ethanol extracts with concentrations of 100% had a significant difference (p <0.05) compared to negative control. Conclusion: Ethanol extracts from P. americana leaves could inhibit HSC-3 proliferation.

Abstract

Introduction: Wound healing is an important but complicated process, containing a multifaceted process. The growth factor involved in the wound healing process is basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Clinacanthus nutans (C. nutans) and A. vera are traditional plants that have the ability to induce fibroblast migration. However, no study has yet compared the effects of C. nutans and A. vera on bFGF protein synthesis associated with wound healing. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of extracts of C. nutans and A. vera on the fibroblast synthesis of bFGF in fibroblasts. Method: Clinacanthus nutans leaf powder was extracted using a solution of hexane and chloroform sequentially. While the A. vera gel is taken. Fibroblasts were treated with several concentrations (10, 50, and 100 µg/mL) within 24 hours. Synthesis of bFGF protein was tested using enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). Result: The chloroform extract of C. nutans and A. vera up regulated the synthesis of bFGF. Concentration of 10 µg/mL C. nutans showed the highest bFGF protein synthesis compared to other treatment groups. Conclusion: Chloroform extract of C. nutans and A. vera can up regulated the synthesis of bFGF in fibroblasts.
