Abstract

This research aimed to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety students in English class and the most dominant factors that caused students’ speaking anxiety faced by the third grade students of Junior High School in SMPN 15 Bengkulu in English Classroom. This research used descriptive quantitative design with questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire of this research was Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) proposed by Horwitz et al. (1983). The data has been analyzed by using SPSS program. The population of this research was the third grade students in SMPN 15 Bengkulu. The total is 7 classes: class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E, Class F, and Class G. The total number of population is 163 students. From 7 classes, the researcher decided to take only 20% of student each. The result of this research showed that the majority of the students of the third-grade were Mildly Anxious level and the most dominant factors causing the student speaking anxiety was the Fear of Negative Evaluation. According to the result, most of the students were already feel anxious about the fact that they had to speak in a group or individually and also being evaluated by the teacher in front of the English class. In conclusion, the researcher found that students are afraid to speak up in front of the class because they always think that other students will laugh at them and judge the student who speaks in front of the class. This might make the student’s speaking anxiety arise and make them to stay silent instead of speaking.

Abstract

The design of this research was descriptive quantitative. It aimed to find out the category of material and task in Bahasa Inggris Textbook for Senior High School published by Kemendikbud 2014. The subject of this study was textbook for grade tenth, consisting of 2 books (first semester and second semester) which each book consist of 9 chapters which were made up 268 materials and tasks. The data was collected by using observation checklist that proposed by Permendikbud number 08 2016 and some experts (Cunningsworth (1995), Celce-Murcia (1979), Wahab (2013)). The result showed that the materials and tasks which divided into 4 aspects; material aspect, linguistic aspect, material presentation aspect and graph aspect showed the different result. The material aspect was categorized into poor category while the others were categorized into good category. Therefore this book can be categorized into good category. In language skills (listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill) also showed the different result. The listening skill showed low percentage in good category while the others skill showed high percentage in good category. Consequently, it can be concluded that language skills in this book was not balance.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students’ attitude toward “Quipper School” as an English online learning media. The population of this research was the whole students of SMAN 1 Argamakmur Bengkulu Utara, with the total population of 667 students. The sample of this research was 158 students. It was chosen by using clustered random sampling. The instrument that was used in this research was questionnaire which consists of 27 items and was divided into three aspects, namely cognitive, affective, and behavior aspect. The interview was used to confirm and to support the data from the questionnaire. The result of this research shows that students had positive attitude toward “Quipper School” as an English online learning media, with the mean score for all aspect was 3.76; the mean score for cognitive aspect was 3.85; the mean score for affective aspect was 3.71; and the mean score for behavior aspect was 3.72. It means that students of SMAN 1 Argamakmur Bengkulu Utara generally have a positive attitude toward “Quipper School” as an English online learning media.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore and describe the types of conflict that occurred in the ParaNorman Movie. This research object was the ParaNorman movie, specifically its main character Norman Babcock. The instruments consisted of observation protocol and documentation. Data collection was through eight necessary steps, namely, 1) watch the movie, 2) download the script, 3) make sure the script and the movie were in line, 4) observe the conflicts, 5) identify the conflict, 6) note the conflict resolution, 7) summarize into the table of analysis and 7) analyze and describe the data in details. This research result showed that, in the ParaNorman movie, four conflict types existed such as 1) character-vs-self, 2) character-vs-character, 3) character-vs-supernatural, 4) character-vs-society. Consequently, it could be concluded that there were 4 types of conflict in ParaNorman movie.

Abstract

This research analyzes the Civil Engineering department students' needs for English learning materials and the need regarding the language element by students in English learning material in the civil engineering department. Populations in this research were carried out in the Department of Civil Engineering, at the University of Bengkulu. This research used descriptive quantitative research with questionnaire as the tools in collecting data and interview was carried out to find out in-depth and strengthen the questionnaire. To analyze the data, the writer involved two steps in analyzing the data collected; Give questionnaires to civil students using Google Form and then they were given 2 days to fill out and Analyze and explain the results of the list of answers from the questionnaire. The result of this research showed that the civil engineer students want to improve their English speaking skills and listening skills to communicate in their activities in the field of civil engineering where the material provided is easily understood by the students. In addition, the language element they want is more conversational. The English conversations given are more situational conversations and the texts given are more discussion texts. The last, English is important for professional needs because English is needed for everything such as the TOEFL score and confidence in their English which is one of the requirements to continue studying and to become an employee in a company.
