Abstract

Language as a means of communication is used as a means of message exchange between the sender and the receiver. Information conveyed through words or text of an ad can involve feelings, emotions and cultural values. They all establish a communication process which has an important power as a marketing tool in the form of information that is persuasive. Language has a power and with it language is used by producer, ad makers or sender, to interact with its readers or receivers. This communication shows power relation between producer and consumer. Power relation is constructed so that the sender can position himself as desired. He, the owner of the power, can make his position higher, equal or lower than the consumer’s. Language as a means of communication can be used as a tool to build the power.  Key words: Language, ad, communication, power, sender, receiver.

Abstract

Knowledge and behavior which are socially transmitted are called culture. Culture is shared by some group of people. Culture is abstract. It is located in the idea of human who lives in community. In more traditional definitions of the term, culture is said to embody the best that has been thought and said in society. People who live in society of course have tradition in their community. It can be seen from their way of life, how they interact to their relatives, and how they address their relatives. In this research, the writer discusses about the relationship of kinship in a community which influences the way of communication with certain relatives. The cultural community which becomes the object of this research is Karo culture. Karo has a tradition which is known as rebu. Rebu is a prohibition of direct communication with certain relatives.  The used data are primary data and secondary data. The methods of data collection are metode simak, metode cakap and metode introspeksi. In analyzing the data, the writer uses sociolinguistics as metode padan. While method of data presentation which is used by the writer is descriptive study with informal method.  From the results of the research, it can be concluded that rebu tradition in Karo culture, relation between mami-kela, bengkila-permain and erturangku, are not allowed  to communicate directly. In establishing a communication, they have to use the third person as intermediary.  Keywords : Sociolinguistics, Karo culture, rebu, kinship.

Abstract

Men and women can never be separated from communication. Every day, men and women, as social beings, interact one another. However, in the interactions made by men and women, there are differences based on gender. The differences is what finally encourage the authors to analyze the language of conversation between men and women in daily life.This study entitled “Gender Differences in Daily Conversation in ‘It’s a Boy Girl Thing’ Movie Script”, discusses the differences of daily conversation performed by men and women in a movie along with the script. In this research, the writer uses library research as the methodof data collection, padan and agih method as the method of data analysis, and in method of presenting data the writer uses informal method.The writer takes 20 data of conversations between men and women disaggregated by the writer from the movie script. The results of the research shows that women tend to talk more polite than men. In the topic of conversation, men and women also different. Men prefer todiscuss sports, politics, sometimes women, and others, while women prefer to discuss men, accessories, self, and others. Hopefully this research can be useful for men and women in establishing good communication between them both.Keywords: gender differences, communication, movie, men and women.
