Abstract

This article has purposes to determine types and variations of interaction patterns that the lecturers applied in teaching. It is also to describe advantages of the interactions in students’ learning process. A qualitative research was implemented where 10 lecturers who teach English at Language Development Center of IAIN Padangsidimpuan involved in the study. To collect the data, interview were given to lecturers and observation was done in ten classrooms. Then, descriptive data analysis was implemented in analyzing the data that were collected. The study revealed that all lecturers had tried hard to vary the interaction patterns in teaching. Several interaction patterns were seen dominantly used by lecturers, i.e. group work, full-class interaction, close and open-ended questioning, choral responses, and individual work. Moreover, there are some advantages that students can take from the variations of interaction patterns, namely; (1) students can share ideas with friends and lead them to be active, (2) students have lots of chances to practice English skills, (3) and interaction patterns makes the learning interesting and fun.

Abstract

Online learning has been becoming a solution for schools, institutions, and universities that cannot run face-to-face learning. During the online learning process, there are challenges that stakeholders including teachers and lecturers often face. One of the challenges is in choosing assessment techniques which in this case is related to English learning assessment. Thus, the objective of this study is to elaborate some effective techniques for English learning assessment. Qualitative research was applied as a research design conducted at the English Education Department of the Institute for Islamic Studies of Padangsidimpuan. Ten lecturers of the English Department were chosen purposively as respondents and interview was used as a data collection technique. Then, data were analyzed through qualitative data analysis in which the data were described and elaborated in detailed ways. The findings revealed that there were many techniques that could be applied in English assessment methods. Among the methods are online tests using Google form application, discussion, and problem-solving, writing essays and summary, online presentation, multimedia presentation, mini-research, voice thread, storytelling, recording performance, online interview, and making content on social media. The study also unveiled that lecturers’ creativity is needed to create an objective and effective assessment for online learning.

Abstract

Teachers’ teaching creativity could facilitate effective learning and influence students’ learning motivation. It also creates the classroom not only just teaching, giving knowledge, and transferring information, but it also can give interest and extra experiences for students. The aim of this study was to investigate how teachers implemented their teaching creativity in EFL context. Then, this study was in a form of qualitative research applying descriptive method in analyzing the data. Five qualified English teachers at Language Development Center of State Institute for Islamic Studies Padangsidimpuan were purposively chosen as participants of the research. In addition, observation and interview were conducted to collect the data related to the implementation of teachers’ creativity in teaching English, and descriptive data analysis was used in analyzing them. Finally, related to the finding, this study conveyed that teachers’ teaching creativity was resulted from teachers’ sharing session and teaching observation. Then, teaching creativity were seen from several aspects; teachers often applied various “ice breaker” activity, they always implemented games in teaching, the teachers also could develop meaningful and contextual material, and they could make use limited media becoming useful and interesting.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat bagaimana para guru mencocokkan gaya mengajar mereka dengan gaya belajar siswa. Penelitian ini adalah jenis penelitian kualitatif yang menyelidiki dan menggambarkan fenomena gaya guru dalam mencocokkan gaya belajar siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di IAIN Padangsidimpuan terhadap 10 kelas sebagai responden yang terdiri dari 222 siswa dan 10 guru. Untuk mengumpulkan data, kuesioner diberikan kepada siswa, wawancara dan observasi diberikan kepada guru. Kemudian, analisis data deskriptif diimplementasikan dalam menganalisis data yang dikumpulkan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa dari 222 siswa, 57 siswa adalah pelajar visual, 46 siswa adalah pelajar audio, 29 siswa adalah pelajar verbal dan 90 siswa adalah pelajar kinestetik. Sehubungan dengan gaya mengajar guru, terlihat bahwa hampir semua guru dianggap sebagai guru yang suka menyuruh siswa untuk membuat tugas otentik dan memberikan contoh terkait dengan konteks kehidupan nyata siswa. Selanjutnya, untuk mencocokkan gaya peserta didik kinestetik, para guru menyediakan banyak permainan, untuk mencocokkan peserta didik visual para guru menggunakan banyak gambar, untuk mencocokkan peserta didik audio guru juga memberikan penjelasan lisan, akhirnya untuk mencocokkan peserta didik verbal para guru memberikan penjelasan tertulis di papan tulis. Akhirnya, dapat disimpulkan bahwa guru telah mencoba mencocokkan gaya mengajar mereka dengan gaya belajar siswa. Namun, sangat dianjurkan bagi para peneliti berikutnya untuk menyelidiki gaya mengajar guru dan kaitannya dengan prestasi siswa

Abstract

Learning autonomy means learners have to take responsibility in handing their own learning with the help and supervision guided by teachers. Then, selecting types of assessment techniques can be a way to create students’ learning autonomy during the instructional process. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine some techniques of English learning assessment that can foster students’ learning autonomy in online learning environment. Qualitative research was applied as research design done at English Education Department of the Institute for Islamic Studies of Padangsidimpuan. Ten lecturers of English Education Department were chosen purposively as respondents and interview was used as data collection technique. Then, the data were analyzed through qualitative data analysis in which the data were described and elaborated in detail ways. Related to findings, this study found some techniques of English learning assessment that regarded effective to improve students’ independence in online learning i.e. portfolio assessment, discussion and problem solving, essays and summary writing, online presentation, multimedia presentation, mini research, and recording performance task. Finally, this study concluded that there are many assessment techniques to foster students’ online learning autonomy and the promotion of learning autonomy becomes an important aspect to be included in online learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigated types of games applied by the teachers in teaching speaking, described the problems faced by the teachers in implementing the games, and found out the solutions done to overcome the problems. Then, this study was in a form of qualitative research applying descriptive method in analyzing the data. Observation and interview were conducted to collect the data related to the implementation of the games, and descriptive data analysis was used in analyzing them. This study found that there were some games used by the teachers in teaching speaking e.g find someone who, hot seat, whispering, interview, survey, finger up and down, memory chain, and fact or fake game. The problems also happened during speaking practice like the use of mother tongue due to lack of vocabulary, cheating, and passive students. Finally, the teachers did solutions to solve the problems like giving clear instructions, and setting the rules before playing the games.

Abstract

This study talked about interaction patterns in EFL teaching and learning context which aims to explore types of interaction patterns implemented by the teachers, problems faced and solutions done to solve the problems. The problem in this study was formulated into three namely; 1) what types of interaction patterns do the teachers use in teaching English?, 2) What are the problems faced by teachers in applying interaction patterns in teaching English, and 3) How do the teachers solve the problems in implementing interaction patterns in teaching English?. The research in this study was in a form of qualitative descriptive research. This study conducted research toward three qualified teachers at Language Development Center of IAIN Padangsidimpuan together with the students who study English with them. The instruments used were observation and interview. This study found that there were some interaction patterns applied by the teachers in teaching English. They were group work, full class interaction, close ended teachers questioning, open ended teachers questioning, individual work, choral responses, and students initiate and teachers answer. From these interaction patterns, there are two patterns dominantly used by the teachers i.e. group work and full class interaction. Related to the problems of implementing interaction patterns, this study found that teachers got difficulty in monitoring students’ group work and students’ full class activity
