Abstract

A huge number of immigrant families live and work in America where most aspects of lives are remotely similar to the ones we have here in Indonesia, for instance. Many of their children experience some unique developmental realities that are different from the ones experienced by children in some other parts of the world. Some experience challenges in their growth through the dynamics of their relationship with others, particularly their family members. Some others experience it because of their socioeconomic status. This study looks at children from Asian minority communities growing up in the US, Zahra and Linda. Understanding their developments is deemed critical to help us understand the distinction of their developments. Zahra is from Saudi Arabia and lives with her parents in Northern Albuquerque and Linda is from Indonesia, living in California. For Zahra, Arabic is her first language and she is still learning English at this time. Linda, however, was born in Indonesia but raised since she was 3 months old in the US which makes English her first language, although her family still uses Indonesian at home. By observing them, we can gain great insights into their cognitive, social, and physical development and utilize that knowledge to better understand childhood and adolescent development within the immigrant community as a whole

Abstract

AbstractThis article discusses the comparison of adolescent literacy attitudes in Indonesia and the United States which is described through the advertising content published in each magazine which is studied based on a qualitative approach. In this project, one Indonesian magazine (Annida) and one United States magazine (Discovery girls) were used as samples. Both are young women's magazines that have similar components such as reader letters, short stories, fashion tips, consulting, and advertising. The reason for sampling these two magazines is because of their availability and the purpose is to compare the advertising components in the two magazines and see the frequency of categories related to literacy behavior such as books, magazines or novels and other types of literary texts. Although these two magazines do not fully represent Indonesian youth and American youth, the advertisements in both magazines can help explain the reality of literacy behavior in the two countries in question, Indonesia and the United States.

Abstract

This research explores the relationship between prior knowledge of human development and students' understanding of teacher candidates regarding child development issues in schools. 366 student teacher candidates from various teaching programs at UIN Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary became participants in this study. Data regarding prior knowledge of human development and understanding of child development issues in schools were collected through a scale-based questionnaire which was then analyzed through Pearson Product Moment analysis. The results of the analysis show that the relationship between the variable prior knowledge about the stages of human development and the variable understanding of child development issues at school is strong and significant (significance level = 0.99, p value <0.05). From these results, it can be concluded that student teacher candidates who have better knowledge about the stages of child development tend to have a better understanding of the developmental issues faced by children in the school environment.

Abstract

This study is a non-experimental research that explores the relationship between parents’struggles and students’ learning motivation in higher education. Theories of Parental Involvement and The Expectancy Theory of Motivation are used as foundations of this research. 389 students are selected to participate in filling out surveys administered online to accommodate the transition to online learning recently. The correlational bivariate analysis results show that the relationship (p) between the two variables are significant at 0,01 level and that the strength of the relationship (r) is shown to be strong at 0,60 level. This means that the more struggles experienced by parents, the higher the students’ learning motivation become. Thus, the null hypothesis in this study is rejected. This study is supposed to be a preliminary investigation on the topic and further research is needed. Suggestions to the parties involved in the teaching practice are made.

This correlational study investigates the parents' and teachers' cooperation regarding the students' digital literacy development in light of the transition to online learning. This study was conducted at SDN 200118 Padangsidimpuan, with 103 students recruited as a sample of this study. The data is collected from the questionnaires distributed to sample the class teachers and the students. The correlation between the two variables was analyzed with Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS 23, in which the result shows the value of .565 and sig. 0.000 < 0.05. Thus, it can be stated that the alternative hypothesis, which states that there is a relationship between the parent and teacher cooperation variable with the development of students' digital literacy, is accepted.
