Abstract

Technology, using its ability to reach audience at anytime and anywhere, has emerged as a powerful platform to assist learners in their language learning. This paper aims to discuss generally (1) how to develop web-based learning using Hot Potatoes and Editplus, and (2) how does web-based learning model using hot potatoes optimize English language learning. Krashen claims that real acquisition happens only as a result of exposure to comprehensible and meaningful input is only slightly beyond their current level of competence (i+1). Developing web-based learning model can be one of the strategy for providing comprehensible input for the learners since it can be accessed at anytime and anywhere by anyone. Besides, web-based learning model help the learners exposed by other platforms easily, leading them to unconscious daily input to English language. Little research discusses about the combination use of Hot Potatoes and Editplus in making a web-based learning. This paper discusses the detailed steps to build a web-based learning using HotPotatoes combined with Editplus, in order to make a web-based learning model to optimize the input in English language learning.

Abstract

In the discussion about social injustice, inequality becomes a core issue. It is proven by inequality themed short stories which are still relevant nowadays although they were written decades ago. In this paper we analyse the 1928’s short story Magic written by Katherine Anne Porter under Fairclough's (1922) critical discourse analysis. It aims at finding social wrong—especially inequality issues in the short story and finding possible ways to solve the social wrong. The analysis will be done in the framework of Fairclough’s critical discourse methods which divides the discourse into three dimensions, i.e. linguistic description of the language text, interpretation of the relationship between the discursive processes and the text, and explanation of the relationship between the discursive processes and social processes (Fairclough, 1995). To describe the linguistic aspect of the text, appraisal theory is used as the approach to support the process of analyzing the linguistic elements that create the discourse. Thus, the analysis will link the linguistic and social contexts of the discourse. The results show that there are some social wrongs happen in the story. It is also shown through judgement, affect, and appreciation.

Abstract

This paper outlines a procedure for language textbook analysis from the perspective of second language acquisition (SLA) principles using a minimally modified version of Littlejohn’s three-level framework by Guilloteaux as a preliminary procedure to textbook evaluation for selection. The aim is to analyze to what extent does Indonesian ELT textbook for grade XI reflects the universal SLA principles. The universal SLA principles used as material analysis criteria in this paper were drawn from the literature selected by Guilloteaux. This analysis revealed that the Indonesian ELT textbook by the Ministry of Education and Culture reflected SLA principles closely. Although only in-use evaluation can determine the extent to which this textbook actually supports language acquisition, the evidence suggests that the textbook is potentially supportive to English language learning.

Abstract

This research is a comparative analysis between two mass media in producing politic news responding to the establishment of the new KPK law by using Critical Discourse Analysis. The research aims to look for and to compare the social wrongs and ideologies brought by the writers from the chosen texts. In order to do critical analysis discourse, the researchers use Fairclough analytic-three-dimensional framework which is wrapped in the four stages of Roy Bhaskar explanatory critiques presented by  Fairclough (2013).The first stage focuses on the social wrong which has semiotic aspects that is analyzed through its linguistic choice by using Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White. The social wrong of the text is represented by the use of attitude consisting of affect, appreciation, and judgment as it shows the writers’ attitude towards the related parties in the texts. The second stage identifies the obstacles to it being tackled through the analysis of the network of practices, the relationship of the semiosis to other elements and the semiosis itself. It is analyzed using Gee’s Seven Building Tasks of Language. It aims to analyze the areas of “reality” that are built through the texts, which can be used to understand the meaning of the discourse. It may also be used to understand different aspects of the meaning being created through discourse. The ideology of the text is represented by the significances, activities, identities, relationships, politics, connections, and sign systems & knowledge in the texts. The third stage considers whether the social order needs the problems/the social wrong. The last stage reveals the possible ways to tackle the obstacles. The findings from these steps of analysis are combined and interpreted together. It is found that the article produced by The Jakarta Post, as a verified news editorial by the Indonesian Press Council, apparently seems to share more negative attitudes compared to Independent Observer which is not verified yet. This shows the social wrong establishes in the social order: the politicization of the media, which is clearly unnecessary in the social order since it makes the media are politically polarized. Despite the ideological differences in the two articles, both articles basically share the same ideology: the importance of eradicating corruption in Indonesia.
