Abstract

Covid-19 outbreak has brought a great disruption to instructional process. Needless to say, the goal of instructional process needs to shift from student centred learning to promoting learner autonomy. Yet, it is important to conduct a study which learn the students’ capacity to be autonomous. This present study aims at investigating learners’ autonomous learning capacity during this outbreak. The researcher employed a mix method design where the data obtained were presented in both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. There are total 30 higher education students chosen to be the subjects of the present study. The data were gathered through different instruments; questionnaire and semi structured interview. The questionnaire comprises five major aspects in measuring learners’ capacity in autonomous learning. In order to achieve the credibility of the data, the researchers’ employs triangulation of data. The results of the study showed that learners have the capacity of autonomous learning to some extent. Learners are quite self-directed in the aspects of defining content and progression, monitor the procedure of acquiring knowledge, and doing self-evaluation. Meanwhile, the aspects of setting objectives and selecting method to learn need to be improved. The findings imply that optimization of learning is a must despite all boundaries that challenge both learners and educators.

Abstract

Contextual and integrated teaching and learning is one of the most important issues to discuss in the respect of educating students with particular social background. This empowers students to actively learn a subject because the material provided is close to their daily lives while being integrated to other subject. This study aims to develop an English teaching material integrated with Hindus religious values for students of State Hindu University of I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa Denpasar, employing a Research and Development design by adopting the ADDIE model. Further, students are expected to not only improve their English skills, but also strengthen their religious values. The analysis phase includes needs analysis by examining the current syllabus, observing the teaching in classroom, and interviewing students. During the design process, the product is decided to be in a form of e-module integrating religious values. Development process focuses on the validity test of the product and also field tryout to examine the product’s practicality and usability. The validity test involves five experts on content, layout, and display of the product where all components resulted in valid category. The result on the field tryout toward small group also reveal that the content aspect get 717 points (78%) and categorized as good, the layout aspect get 620 points (77%) and categorized as good, and language aspect get 435 (75%) and being categorized as good. The result of this study is expected to provide lecturers with options in teaching English as compulsory subject in higher Education.

Abstract

The disruption and development of technology has rapidly transformed the educational system these days. Its practicality has driven students to equip themselves with technological devices and software, particularly those with Artificial-intelligence. This study aimed at identifying students’ perspective on the implementation of Artificial-Intelligence Powered App as Learning Aid in Improving Learning Autonomy. Specifically, this study identified whether or not the use of Artificial-Intelligence Powered App as Learning Aid could change learners’ perspective on autonomous learning and improve their learning autonomy. Further, the perspective being investigated is related to learners perspective on their role in fostering autonomy as well as learners’ perspective toward the teachers’ role. The researchers conducted the study by following a collaborative action research. The data of the study were collected using questionnaires and semi structured interview. Then, the results of the questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively and the results of the interview were analyzed qualitatively. This study finds out that incorporating artificial intelligence powered apps has successfully changed learners’ perspective on autonomous learning. Besides, the use of artificial intelligence powered app also works positively in fostering learners’ autonomy. Since this study was conducted using action research method, the result of the study cannot be generalized to a larger population. Thus, an experimental study that apply inferential statistics analysis is needed to support the results of the study. HIGHLIGHTS: One of the challenges in fostering learner autonomy is making them understand of the need to be autonomous. Learners initially thought that teachers should spoon-feed them the learning materials. AI powered apps like Mondly has the potential to help students understand their roles and teacher’s roles during learning by providing them features that encourage autonomous learning activities, such as planning, monitoring and evaluating their learning.
