Abstract

Background: The high prevalence of anemia pregnant women anemia in Indonesia reaches 50%–70%, and it is caused by many factors. First, it may be caused by low compliance of iron supplementation and second, it may be caused by bad distribution of iron supplementation. This prevalence results some effect: high maternal mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate, anemia in infancy, and low productivity. One solution to overcome this prevalence is by giving iron supplementation to pregnant women with husband’s supervision. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between iron supplementation with compliance, Hb value, and average of age gestation under husband’s supervision. Methods: This was quasi experimental non-equivalent control group design. Subjects were pregnant women aged 20–28 weeks whose hemoglobin level 8 gr/dl to 15 gr/dl. Subject were taken from three sub-districts of Bantul District, Special Teritory of Yogyakarta. Subject were divided into two groups, the first group (n=55) received 60 mg iron supplementation with husband’s supervision and the second group (n=65) received 60 mg iron supplementation without husband’s supervision. Results: The compliance of first the group was higher than the second group (x2=19,48 p<0,01). In the first group, iron supplementation was effective to increase Hb level it was statistically insignificant (p>0,05). In the second group, iron supplementation was also effective to increase Hb level and it is statistically significant (p<0,05). The difference of Hb level between two groups was insignifi cant. After the predictor variable was controlled using multivariate regression test, it showed that iron supplementation with husband’s supervision was effective to increased Hb level 0,8 gr/dl and statistically signifi cant (p<0,05). The gestation average of two groups was similar, but after predictor variable was controlled using multivariate test, it showed that iron supplementation with husband’s supervision had one week gestation longer than those group without husband’s supervision. Conclusion: Iron supplementation with husband’s supervision are effective to lengthen one week age gestation.

Abstract

Background: Nutrition problems may happen to all groups of ages. A problem at a particular age group may affect nutrition status of the next periodic life cycle (intergenerational impact). Malnourished children may encounter physical growth, mental and intellectual disorder. Someone’s nutrition status may be affected by food consumption supply. Nutrition status can affect children schooling and academic achievement. Children suffering from iron deficiency have lower score in cognitive growth, study and academic achievement. Objective: To identify relationship between food consumption and haemoglobin (Hb) level and academic achievement of junior high school students at Palembang Municipality.Method: The study was an analytical survey with cross sectional design. Population and samples were junior high school students at Palembang Municipality as subject of the study. Samples were chosen with multistage sampling design, the group was randomly selected and samples of each junior high school and grade were chosen using proportional stratified random sampling technique. Data analysis used univariable, bivariable and multivariable techniques. Bivariable statistical test was used to identify relationship between food consumption and academic achievement and between Hb level and academic achievement; whereas regression test was used to identify relationship between food consumption and Hb level. Meanwhile, multivariable analysis used double linear regression. Data of food consumption were processed using NutriSurvey program for Windows. All data were then processed with SPSS program version 10.Result: There was relationship between food consumption (energy, protein, vitamin C, zinc intake) and academic achievement (energy: p=0.001, r=0.372; protein: p=0.046, r=0.209; vitamin C: p=0.009, r=0.273; zinc: p=0.042, r=0.214), and there was relationship between Hb level and academic achievement (p=<0.001, r=0.421). There was relationship between food consumption (energy intake) and Hb level. (p=0.051, r=0.205).Conclusion: The result of multivariable showed that only Hb level had significant relationship with academic achievement (p=<0.001, B=2.077).

Abstract

Background: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome has significantly increased in both developed and developing countries. Criteria of metabolic syndrome includes: body mass index of > 27, and male waist circumference of > 102 cm which could be followed by fasting blood glucose level of >110 mg/dl. Other symptoms are blood pressure and triglyceride (of > 130/85 mm Hg and > 150 mg/dl respectively) and decrease in high density lipoprotein to < 40 mg/dl.Objective: This research was aimed to explore the extent to which food habit relates with metabolic syndrome among offshore workers employed by Unocal Oil Company Ltd. Located in Balikpapan.Method: The study which was an observational-analytical was then carried out using case-control design, with comparison 1:1 (matched case control). Nutrients intake measured using the 3 x 24 hours recall method. Chi squares, t- test, odd ratios, and logistic regressions were performed to determine statistical significant among variables.Result: The study showed that energy intake > 110% recommended daily allowance (RDA) between case and control group was significantly different (OR= 7.7; 95% CI= 3.1-18.8). This was also true for the case of total carbohydrate > 60%, (OR= 3.98, 95% CI= 1.6-9.8), refined carbohydrate > 5% (OR= 7.4; 95% CI= 2.9-18.7), total protein > 20% (OR= 3.2; 95% CI= 1.2-8.4), and fat > 20% (OR= 5.04; 95% CI= 1.578-16.1). Logistic regressions were performed to determine statistical significant among variables candidate and the result showed it was significant for refined carbohydrate, energy intake and old work in offshore (p<0.05).Conclusion: This study indicate that nutrient intake was higher than of RDA, it was closely related to the incidence of metabolic syndrome: refined carbohydrate, energy intake and old offshore workers employed (p < 0.05).
