Abstract

Abstract: This is a personal and qualitative look at the way English Literature is taught at the school where the writer teaches and the way it could be improved by relying not only on the Literature Teach­ers but also on teachers of other disciplines. Basically Literature is not a monolithic discipline which could be read and taught by literary theoriticians only, it is actually a pluralistic discipline which is acces­sible to people of any discipline. In fact, even people with no formal academic qualification can enjoy literary texts as well. It is also the purpose of this article to explore how people with different voices of discipline could offer different readings of a literary text.

Abstract

In this article translation is not only confined to the linguist, but also to all strategies that represent a language to another language. The way James Fenimore Cooper translated the Indian language to English in the novel The Last of The Mohicans shows a representation of ethnic harassment manipulation of language. Cooper's translation build up the suggestion that Indians can only communicate only like children. The Indians are portrayed to only communicate by playing with their voice, music, gesture, and using the third-person pronoun to exchange dor the first-person or second-person pronoun. This harassment is correlated with the policy of Indian removal at that era

Abstract

Keahlian apa yang lebih bermanfaat dalam memahami karya sastra? Apakah membaca cermat, kritik budaya, atau stilistika? Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menyaring pendapat yang mendukung masing-masing keahlian tersebut di atas. Selain itu, akan diuraikan upla pendapat saya sendiri bahwa dengan semakin luasnya bidang kajian sasr=tra, yang saat ini sudah memasukkan bidang-bidang ilmu lain, ada baiknya memfokuskan pada membaca cermat dan stilistika. Tulisan ini dibatasi pada pertarungan antar bidang kajian dalam lingkup pengajaran sastra reinaisans.

Abstract

The spread of English in Indonesia carries an inherent philosophy with it. This essay will focus on how the view that ‘there is no absolute truth’ is ingrained in the linguistic modality of English. Furthermore it will show how this philosophy of modality may inevitably shape a student’s character since it allows people to create the shared truths they need or to downgrade the truths of others, with all the potential positive or negative consequences. Finally this essay will also show how a visual picture, descriptive text, and dialogue could serve as teaching aids to shape a student’s character through classroom drills in such modality signifiers as modal auxiliaries, frequency adverbs, reporting frames, tenses etc. On the whole this essay relies heavily on Halliday’s Functional Grammar, von Wright’s Deontic Logic, and Hodge and Kress’s Semiotics while the topic of the picture, text and dialogue heavily centers on the mysterious Alhambra Citadel of Granada
