Abstract

Works of literature during Romantic period are totally unrelated to love, romance or attraction between men and women as widely understood. Rather they exert stress upon sense and feeling where individual freedom is highly esteemed. While Frankenstein (1818) reveals that power of mind and reasoning skill without feeling and conscience can lead to murder and death, Scarlett Letter (1850) shows that self-reliance and a strong spirit of individualism are part and parcel of one's belief. Abstract

Hemingway is a noted American writer and a mouthpiece of the Lost Generation. His writing style and life attitude of the characters in the novels lent color to the whole world. His words are simple, full of emotion and symbolism and strong emphasis upon dialogue. Any efforts to fathom Hemingway must include his writing style in his novels. Abstract

Teaching English in Indonesia, particularly for students, remains agreat challenge owing to the fact that English is a foreign languagein this country. The challenge could be tackled through teachingliterature. Literature has been a subject of study in many countriesat a secondary or tertiary level, but until recently has not been givenmuch emphasis in the EFL/ESL classroom. It is considered a veryversatile subject and is generally considered one of the most difficult subjects to teach. Abstract

Terrorism should not be a security issue in any part of the world anymore. It truly goes out of mainstream, namely intellectual and cultural dimensions. The dimensions are non security issues, critical education, religious depersonalization, the needs for ambassadors, reconciling liberal and fundamental Muslims and cyber religion. These dimensions constitute major aspects to be viewed when it comes to fathoming religious radicalization and terrorism across the country. Various terrorist attacks have taken place across Indonesia in the past few years. Different approaches ranging from security to cultural modes have been applied. Yet, expected outcome, which is peace, remains far from public hope. Rather than spending physical and financial resources, intellectual approach is seriously pressing. This article attempts to look into the very nature of religious radicalization leading to terrorist acts across the country Terorisme semestinya tidak lagi menjadi masalah keamanan di belahan dunia manapun. Hal tersebut berada dalam sudut pandang di luar mainstrem, yaitu dimensi intelektual dan budaya. Dimensi-dimensi tersebut di antaranya; masalah non keamanan, pendidikan kritis, depersonalisasi agama, kebutuhan akan duta besar, mendamaikan umat Islam yang liberal dan fundamental dan fenomena agama maya. Dimensi-dimensi ini merupakan aspek pembuktian utama yang harus dilihat ketika ingin memahamani radikalisasi agama dan terorisme di seluruh negeri. Berbagai serangan teroris telah terjadi di seluruh Indonesia dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Pendekatan yang berbeda mulai dari keamanan hingga budaya telah diterapkan, namun hasil yang diharapkan, yaitu perdamaian, masih jauh dari harapan masyarakat. Daripada menghabiskan sumber daya fisik dan keuangan, akan lebih baik menekankan pendekatan intelektual secara serius. Artikel ini mencoba untuk melihat dimensi intelektual dan kebudayaan dalam mencari solusi dari dampak negatif radikalisasi agama bertolak dari pengalaman catatan-catatan tentang terorisme dan radikalisme agama di Indonesia.

Abstract

Post truth relates to circumstances whereby objective facts are less influential in shaping the opinion of the public, rather appealing to personal belief and emotion. Post truth era is bordering a blurry line between lies and truths, dishonesty and honesty, nonfiction and fiction. The entire phenomenon of post truth is about an individual’s opinion being worth more than the facts. As such, the present paper seeks to understand new insights or perspectives in literary criticism in the post truth era. The criticism of the literature was always based on broad schools of thoughts/theories, which were employed for many centuries. Some of the traditional approaches the paper highlights include: formalistic criticism, biographical criticism, historical criticism, gender criticism, psychological criticism, sociological criticism, mythological criticism, reader-response criticism, and deconstructionist criticism. Equally, the paper extensively analyzes some of the new perspectives or insights to literary criticism in the post truth era: reflective approach, didactic approach, partisan approach, and religious approach. In reflective approach to literature criticism in the post truth era, the meaning in the literature is reflected by the outside of its own being. On the other hand, in didactic approach to literature criticism, truth and meaning is taught in the literature. Moreover, in partisan approach to literature criticism, there is the truthful meaning that is already known and can be found in the literature. Lastly, in the religious approach to literature criticism in post truth era, the meaning and truth is the literature itself, while the outside world has nothing to do with it.

Abstract

The tension between the individual standpoint and the communal perspective often lends colour to the works of literary critics of Indonesian literature. The use of communal perspectives in critiques and personal ideologies of critics are openly declared in their works. The communal perspective outweighs any liberal or conservative beliefs as the aim of most literary critics is to advocate for the development of the society. As such, literary critics either focus on reconciling progressive ideas with cultural values or criticise liberal themes since they prefer to maintain social ideals. Although Indonesia has some progressive values that are followed in the society, the traditional values that existed before colonialism are considered as superior and more beneficial to the society.Ketegangan antara sudut pandang individu dan perspektif komunal sering kali memberikan warna pada karya-karya kritikus sastra sastra Indonesia. Penggunaan perspektif komunal dalam kritik dan ideologi pribadi kritik dinyatakan secara terbuka dalam karya mereka. Perspektif komunal lebih banyak daripada kepercayaan liberal atau konservatif karena tujuan dari para kritikus sastra adalah untuk memajukan pengembangan masyarakat. Dengan demikian, para kritikus sastra fokus pada rekonsiliasi ide -ide progresif dengan nilai -nilai budaya atau mengkritik tema-tema liberal karena mereka lebih suka mempertahankan cita -cita sosial. Meskipun Indonesia memiliki beberapa nilai progresif yang diikuti dalam masyarakat, nilai -nilai tradisional yang ada sebelum kolonialisme dianggap lebih unggul dan lebih bermanfaat bagi masyarakat.

Abstract

Barbara Baynton, in her collection of short stories, Bush Studies, examines the various types of people that exist in the rural regions of Australia. She presents a study of different identities that were left out or wrongly represented in the traditional narratives of Australian national identity at the time. She dismantled the widespread and broadly accepted bush narrative of the Australian national identity that played a significant role in the marginalization of anyone who was not White and Male. Qualitative method is used to determine the accuracy of the hypothesis. It was observed that the women and people of other ethnicities belonging to the rural Australian region were marginalized through wrongful representation or no representation in the narrative of national identity and Barbara Baynton makes efforts in Bush Studies to do otherwise. She depicts the sufferings and psyche of the people in the rural region and presents a new layer of their identities. The theory used is Postcolonial Criticism.

Abstract

Kajian ini mengambil topik “Perbandingan Film Romeo and Juliet dan The Merchant of Venice sebagai adaptasi karya William Shakespeare: Sebuah Pendekatan Production Analysis”. Permasalahan penelitian ini adalah Meskipun film Romeo and Juliet dan The Merchant of Venice sama-sama diadaptasi dari karya-karya Shakespeare dengan judul yang sama, namun ternyata terjadi perbedaan, baik dalam proses proses produksi yang dijalani maupun resepsi masyarakat atas kedua film adaptasi Shakespeare tersebut. Perbedaan ini menjadi penting untuk dicermati bukan saja untuk melihat tarik-menarik dalam proses produksi tapi juga kenapa terjadi perbedaan resepsi masyarakat, terutama para penonton film, yang akhirnya mempengaruhi distribusi film-film tersebut. Tulisan ini mencoba menggunakan teori ekranisasi dan hegemoni. Ada sejumlah kesimpulan yang bisa diambil dari tulisan sebelumnya. Pertama, adaptasi karya-karya Shakespeare menjadi film merupakan salah satu karya-karya sinematografis yan tak kunjung padam di Amerika. Kedua, popularitas film Romeo and Juliet terletak pada proses adaptasi yang luar biasa dan universalisme tema yang diusung, yakni percintaan. Ketiga, kehadiran film Romeo and Juliet dan The Merchant of Venice memberikan dampak yang besar terhadap masyarakat. Romeo and Juliet mendorong munculnya kembali minat intelektual dan akademis sekolah-sekolah, seperti Amerika Serikat dan Jepang, mempelajari Shakespeare. Abstract

The Australian literacy criticism has focused mostly on the gender issues, preferably the discrimination of women in the society. However, critics are not only biased in their work based on their gender, but also fail to agree on the most appropriate method of critiquing; individual or collective. This is unlike Indonesian critics where they embrace communal criticism as it contributes to positive change to the society. The failure to have clear-cut perspective on which criticism method should be appropriate shows that there is a significant gap that needs to be filled, thus necessitating the current study.
