Abstract

White teak or gmelina (Gmelina arborea Roxb.) is a wood that can be used as raw material for laminating boards. Factors that affect the quality of laminating boards include the type of raw material, the color of the wood, the adhesive used, the number of adhesive lines, the weight content of the adhesive, the direction of wood fibres, the wood density and the moisture content. This study investigated effects of adhesive weight content on the strength of the laminating boards. The strength of laminating boards was determined by studying the physical properties of the wood at the dimension stability of the wood and the mechanical properties at the loading capability. These two characteristics might be becoming considerations for manufacturing the laminating boards. The research method used in this study was experimental method and the experimental design was non-factorial Complete Randomized Design (CRD). The treatments of the study were adhesive weight of 150 grams and 200 grams with 3 replications each. The physical and mechanical properties of laminating boards of the white teak were tested in accordance with JAS 234-2007 and SNI 03-2105-2006 standards. The results showed that the adhesive weight had insignificant effect on the physical and mechanical properties. However, it was recommended using the 150 grams adhesive because it was lighter and more economical for manufacturing the laminating boards. According to JAS 243: 2003, the strength class of the laminating boards from white teak wood was class III which could be utilized as building materials such as door frames, windows, panels, furniture, rail sleepers, ship decks and the wood industry.
