Abstract

Thomas Lickona’s concept of character education based on two universal moral values, respect and responsibility, become very influential in the education system in Indonesia due in accordance with the purpose of education to create a good man. However, Lickona’s perception about the attitude of respect and responsibility, stuck on relativity so that the achievement of character education becomes insignificant. This is a library research through descriptive analysis of specifically Lickona’s book "Educating for Character" that is widely used as a guide to many educators in various educational institutions in Indonesia. The results showed that: (1) The term of respect and responsibility seems humanism (2) Lickona’s character education ignore the religious aspect (3) the concept of characters trapped in the relativity of values .

Abstract

Al-Attas revealed that the challenge of this century is the degradation of knowledge so that humans can no longer distinguish between truth and falsehood (the loss of civilization). The science that is falsified, or used as tools and materials of indoctrination for the benefit of personal passions, is precisely by the scientists themselves. The root of this problem is not related to the problem of illiteracy or ignorance of ordinary people, but the existence of misinterpreted science, or the chaos of science due to the imitation of the Western view whose construct is far different from the Islamic worldview. This research analyzes the educational concept of Syed Naquib Al-Attas. As a result, there are three magnificent concepts from al-Attas's thought which subsequently known as the concept of Islamization of science, i.e: semantic analysis – linguistics which is used as a solid argument to support opinions, mastery of Islamic and Western treasures, and wisdom in seeing the ulama and Islam of the Malays.
