Abstract

Discourse deixis is one type of deixis which its interpretation depends greatly to the context surround it. This research was intended to find out the students’ competence in interpreting discourse deixis in narrative text This research is a descriptive research. Fifteen students of third semester students of 2017/2018 Academic Year of STIBA Persada Bunda were taken as the subject of the research. The instruments used to collect the data were quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data was in the form of reading tests. The qualitative data were in the form of interview. From the finding of the research, it was found that: (1) The students’ ability in interpreting discourse deixis in narrative text was in good category. (2) They had problem with the context, situational, and vocabulary. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in interpreting discourse deixis in narrative text needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary and low understanding of context.

Abstract

Reading is one of four basic skills which should be mastered by English majoring students. They are demanded to be able to gain information all kinds of texts well since their learning material and references were taken from English written book. In fact students had problem with motivation, limited vocabulary, and background knowledge. This research is a descriptive research. The purpose of the research was to find out the students’ competence in using reference in reading technical text. The subject of the research was thirteen students of fourth semester of 2017/2018 ABA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The instrument used to collect the data was reading test in the form of multiple choice tests. The result were analyzed to find out the level of students’ competence in using reference in technical text. From the finding, it was found that: (1) The students’ competence in using personal reference in thechnical text was in good category. They had problems with motivation and lack of background knowledge in mastering personal reference (2) the students’ competence in using demonstratives reference in narrative texts was in good category. The problems occurred because they had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ competence in using reference in technical text still needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation.

Abstract

Reference is one component for comprehending a reading text. This research employed descriptive method. The purpose of the research was to find out the students’ ability in using reference in reading narrative text. The subject of the research was twenty two students of fourth semester of 2015/2016 STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The instrument used to collect the data was in the form of multiple tests. From the finding, it was found that: (1) The students’ ability in using personal reference was in good category. They had problems in mastering personal reference which refers forward or cataphora reference (2) the students’ ability in using demonstratives reference in narrative texts was in good category. The problems occurred because they had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in using reference in narrative text still needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation.

Abstract

Technical materials refer to the material which is designed specifically to prepare a specialized career. This research is a descriptive research. The research conducted with an attempt to find out the students’ mastery in using context clue in reading technical material. The subject of the research was twenty students of fourth semester STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017. The instrument used to collect the data was in the form of objective test. It was found that: (1) the students’ mastery in using synonym clue was in good category. They had problem in mastering synonym clue as they made mistake in taking the clue. (2) The students’ mastery in using antonym clue was in fair category. The problem occurred due to their vocabulary whereas the vocabulary used in technical material is high as it designed for native speaker. (3) The students’ mastery in using definition clue was in good category. The students were able to do the test because the clues were stated clearly. Besides, they also had sufficient experience and background knowledge to deduce meaning. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ mastery in using context clue in reading technical marerial is needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary.
