Abstract

This study deals with the shift of addressing term of Mandailingnese society in Panyabungan. It employs qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: (1) the types of shift occur in the use of addressing terms by Mandailingnese speaker in Panyabungan, (2) the pattern of the shift of addressing term and (3) Reasons of Mandailingnese shift the addressing term in Panyabungan. The subjects were 20 respondent from second generation of parents group. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire and interview. The data was analyzed by Miles and Hubermans’ data analysis. There are fourteen respondent (70%) shif completely the addressing term in core family, two respondent (10%) shift partly the addressing term and four respondent (20%) maintain the addressing term. The shift of ddressing terms cover three types; ten respondents (50%) do not participate actively in the life of minority language, three respondents (15%) are not fluent in Mandailing language and seven respondents (35%) those are influenced by their parents to shift the addressing term. There are five patterns of the shift of addressing terms and three reasons why Mandailingnese society shift the addressing term; status of Indonesian language, social success and family tradition. Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills in language learning. Speaking is the act, utterance or discourse of one who speaks. It also can be defined as an activity in giving and asking information as if dialoguing by two or more people. In speaking, there is a process of communication between speaker and listener. People put ideas into words, talking about perceptions and feeling they want other people to understand. The writer observed that most students are difficult to put ideas into word through communication in speaking English. To solve the problem, the writer conducted classroom action research, by implementing debate. The writer applied two cycles in this research. Each cycle consist of three meetings. The participant of this study was one class consists of 32 students. The instrument for collecting the data was speaking test, observation sheet and document. Based on the research result, showed the progressive mean of the students. The first meeting was 46,87, second meeting was 50,09, third meeting was 60,28, the fourth meeting was 65,12, the fifth meeting was 73,56 and the sixth meeting was 77,81. So, the mean in the second cycle was higher than the first cycle.It is indicated that the application of debate technique improve students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

Gesture is a type of non-verbal communication that is very influential in teaching and learning activities and interactions between teachers and students. It is not only can convey the speakers’ intention more specifically and adequately, clarify the teaching instruction, encourage the students’ interest, maximize English teaching’s goal but also can help improve the students’ skill in speaking, writing, reading and listening . This study aims to improve students' speaking, writing, reading, listening and interest in English lessons through the use of gestures at SMA Negeri 1 Batang Natal.The method used was descriptive qualitative. The subjects were 2 teachers and 25 students of 11th grade of SMA Negeri 1 Batang Natal The research instruments used were interviews and observations. The results of this study suggests that the use of movement has positive and negative sides for students. The positive side is that the teacher must be able to use the right movements according to the needs of their students. Creating a comfortable atmosphere and considering the most effective method so that students are activated in participating the lessons. While negative side was using too many movements or being too serious when teaching would not create a comfortable classroom atmosphere.
