Abstract

This research aims to find the kinds of translation error made in writing abstract of theses and dissertations. This research used descriptive quantitative method to analyze and expose the errors of abstracts of theses and dissertations. The data of this research was the abstracts of theses and dissertations of universities in Makassar. It took 61 abstracts of theses and dissertations from different universities. The abstracts is analyzed by using error analysis technique. The result of this research concluded that the abstracts are found various errors. Errors in the kinds of translation were Omission – Deviation – Modification – Addition - and the least is Inversion. The result of this research provides a new information about translation to the students especially to non-English students, and motivate them to translate the abstract well.

Abstract

This research was to find out the kinds of grammatical errors made by the students in writing undergraduate theses and to find out the most common error made by the students. The research problem is What were the kinds of grammatical error made by the students in writing undergraduate thesis? And What was the most common grammatical error made by the students in writing undergraduate thesis? The population of this research was the English students’ undergraduate theses. This research used cluster random sampling technique. The researchers chose 20 backgrounds of undergraduate theses as the sample. The result of this research found eight kinds of grammatical error made by the students namely Article, Verb Tense, Subject-Verb Agreement, Singular/Plural, Word Class, Sentence Structure, Spelling, and Punctuation. The most common grammatical error made by the students in writing undergraduate theses is error in Verb Tense with 86 errors (27.65%). The next is Word Class with 55 errors (17.68%), Sentence Structure with 42 errors (13.50%), Article with 37 grammatical errors (11.89%), Punctuation with 28 errors (9%), Singular/Plural with 24 errors (7.71%), Spelling with 21 errors (6.75%), and Subject-Verb Agreement with 18 errors (5.78%).

Abstract

Based on the preliminary study, most students made error in writing abstract especially in translating Indonesian language into English language. Therefore, the aim of this research was to find out the sources of translation error and the dominant of source of error. This research used a descriptive method. In getting the data, this research applied a purposive sampling technique and the data of this research was taken secretly. The subject of this research was 61 abstracts of theses and dissertation taken from various universities in Makassar and analyzed by using error analysis technique. The result of the research showed that in the sources of translation error, the most error made by the students was Syntactic with 120 errors (62.1%) Lexical with 42 errors (21.7%), Unclassified with 17 errors (8.8%), and the least was Morphological aspect with 14 errors (7.2%). It can be concluded that the dominant source of error was the syntactic aspect.
