Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The aging process causes a setback of various aspects of the body both physically, mentally andpsychologically which indirectly threatens the independence of the elderly and makes them vulnerable to fall.Exercise is generally useful in increasing muscle strength and improving balance and gait in order to reduce therisk of falls. The dual-task motor-cognitive exercise amalgamates physical and cognitive training together andinduces synergistic effects when combined in one intervention. This study aimed to determine the effect of dual-tasktraining on the risk of falls in the elderly. The method used was pre-experimental with one group pre-test post-testdesign with a duration of treatment for 4 weeks with a frequency of 3 times a week. Before and after treatment, respondents measured the level of balance and risk of falling using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed-Upand Go tests (TUGT), and Tinetti Balance Assessment Tool. The results showed an increase in the balance of theelderly after giving 12 exercises based on BBS (p <0.001) and TUGT (p=0.079). The risk of falls seems to declineafter 12 treatments (p <0.001). The highest reduction in risk of falls occurred after the first 6 treatments (p=0.011).It can be concluded that dual-task motoric-cognitive training is significantly influential in reducing the falling riskin the elderly.

Abstract

Introduction: Children with mental retardation are the children who have incomplete mental development, there are an obsctacles during the child’s development that effect their cognitive, motoric, sensory, physical, language, and emotional development. This study aims to determine the effect of perceptual – motor training on changes in cognitive abilities in children with mild mental retardation. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental design with the type of one group pre test and post test. The instrument used montreal – cognitive assessment which consists of 7 cognitive aspects test. The subjects of this study were children with mild retardation from SLB Laniang Makassar who were able to communicate even though the children needed repetition instructions for several times and their aged 10-14 years old. The number of respondent was 17 peoples (out of dropout) and underwent perceptual-motor training for 4 weeks (12 times treatments). Results: The results of this study after Shapiro Wilk normality test obtained normal distribution data (p >0.05), then carried out hypothesis test used Paired T - Test and obtained a significant value p = 0,000 (p <0.05). The results of the data analysis from the pre test and post test showed an increase on cognitive abilities. Conclusion: This shows that there is an effect of perceptual – motor training on changes in cognitive abilities in children with mild mental retardation.

Abstract

The quality of life in children with cerebral palsy is very important to be studied along with the factors that influence it to improve the quality of health services. The Problem of quality of life in children with cerebral palsy is not only influenced by socio-economic aspect, but also health aspect, such as physical health, pain and motor limitation which is experienced by children. This study aims to determine the relationship between gross motor skills and the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy in Makassar. This study used a cross-sectional design with thirty people as the sample (n = 30). They are students who got cerebral palsy at SLB YPAC Makassar, SLB Negeri 1 Pembina at South Sulawesi Province, SLB Laniang and SLB Reskiani Makassar. There are several primary data collected including gross motor skills and quality of life. The data were collected using the PedsQLTM 3.0 questionnaire for the cerebral palsy module and the GMFCS-E & R (Gross Motor Function Classification System Expanded and Resived) measurement guide. Based on the results of the analysis of the relationship test with the fisher exact test, it was found a significance value (p) of 0,037 (p <0.05) with a relative risk value for poor and very bad quality of life, namely 0.714, which means that there is a relationship between gross motor skills and quality of life, with children cerebral palsy who have mild and moderate gross motor skills have a chance to have very poor and poor quality of life 0.714 times less than cerebral palsu children who have severe gross motor skills (N = 30).
