Abstract

This research was conducted to find out and to describe the speaking skills strategies used by the adult EFL students of Pohuwato University and the adults' reason for using those strategies in learning speaking skills. The qualitative descriptive has been employed as the method of the research, and the researcher took the students in the fourth semester of the English department of Pohuwato University as the subject of the research through purposive sampling. To obtain the data, the researcher used the interview and observation as the instrument. The result of the data shows that there are three strategies used by adult EFL students in learning speaking skills. They are cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective strategies. In cognitive strategy, the students mostly like to apply practicing and analyzing and reasoning. In metacognitive, they used to apply arranging and planning and monitoring, and in  socio-affective, they applied to cooperate with  others as their strategies to use in learning speaking skills.

Abstract

The Purpose of this research was to determine and to describe the students’ difficulties in comprehending the western song and their strategies used in improving the ability by the EFL learners of Pohuwato University. The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive and took the first semester of English Department of Pohuwato University as the subject of this research. The researcher used purposive sampling technique in determining the subject and obtaining the data by used interview and observation as the instrument. The result shows that the EFL learners of Pohuwato University had the difficulties in listening the western song. They were didn’t understand the topic of the song, lack of vocabularies and difficult to comprehend the whole song while in comprehending the western song, the EFL learners of Pohuwato University applied four strategies. They were preparing strategy, paying attention strategy and note taking vocabularies in order to understand the whole song message and ideas of the topic from the song.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a basic for language skill development especially in learning a foreign language. This research aims to improve learning outcomes in vocabulary teaching through flash cards. The study was conducted from 08 to 17 October 2019 at SD Hafizh Al-Qurbah Parepare with 15 students as respondents. This study uses a classroom action research method consisting of II cycles with stages in each cycle including planning, implementation, observation and reflection. To obtain the data, the researcher implemented the test and observational sheet as the instrument. The result shows that there is a significant improvement shown from the students’ score achieves 76 in cycle I then increase to 83 in cycle II and the students’ activity improves from the observational sheet description.

Abstract

The study aims to identify grammatical equivalence which covers number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice, to find out whether the translated sentence can be accepted in Indonesian structure and translation problems in English-Indonesian sentences. The data were taken from the film script “The Secret Garden 56 Minutes” in English and its Indonesian subtitles. This study was conducted based on qualitative research methods with the descriptive analysis. The results of this analysis show that there is grammatical equivalence which is found in the subtitles. They are categorized into number, person, gender, tense and aspect, and voice. The first, the grammatical equivalence in number included the singular or plural nouns in the source language (SL) can be translated into the singular or plural nouns in the target language (TL). Second, with regard to person and gender, source language (SL) personal pronouns can be translated into their respective pairs in the target language (TL), Third, tense and aspects, source language (SL) can be translated lexically or understood from the context. The four, voices the active form in the source language (SL) can be translated into the target language (TL) in an active or passive form, and the passive form is translated into a passive form. In translation, when a message or information is omitted by changing the form of the sentence, it will cause problems as in the film the secret garden 56 minutes.

Abstract

English medium instruction has been used in many education levels. Although L2 learners study English since primary education, some of them still cannot communicate and write well in English. It is probably caused by lack of self-esteem, motivation, comprehensible input, and interaction. The present study aimed to investigate the use of English medium instruction on EFL students at tertiary education level. This study employed a quantitative method. The participants of this study were 45 undergraduate students at Khon Kaen University, Thailand. A survey questionnaire regarding the use of English medium instruction with a five point likert scale was assigned to the participants in order to obtain the data. The result of this study revealed that there are some subjects that use English as medium of instruction. Furthermore, the students stated that they got exposure in English in several ways such as read textbook, watch YouTube, and write power point in English. The results also showed that the students’ English ability significantly improve regarding the use of English as medium of instruction

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris mahasiwa dan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa terkait pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris melalui mentimeter platform. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan berfokus kepada peningkatan kemampuan peserta didik di berbagai skills bahasa Inggris. Kualitatif deskriptif merupakan metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam menentukan sampel menggunakan purposive sampling dari mahasiswa di semester 2 dan 4. Instrument yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini mencakup kuesioner dan interview. Hasil penelitian melalui kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris peserta didik dalam bidang speaking), pengucapan (pronunciation), kosa kata (vocabulary), tata bahasa (grammar), menulis (writing), dan kemampuan mendengarkan (listening) sedangkan hasil dari wawancara mendeskripsikan bahwa peserta didik memiliki peningkatan dalam bidang komunikasi dan penguasaan kosakata namun mereka merasa perlu untuk terus diberikan pelatihan dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menggunakan mentimeter platform. Kata Kunci: Mentimeter Platform, Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris, Era Digital Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the ability of students' English education and to determine students' perceptions regarding the process of learning English through mentimeter platform. This research was conducted by focusing on the ability of students improvement in various English skills. In implementing the research, the writer conducted the qualitative descriptive method and took the purposive sampling to determine the sample taken from students at the 2nd and the 4th semester. The instruments used in this study include questionnaires and interviews. The results of the research through the questionnaire showed that there was an increase in students' English skills performance, they are speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and listening. The result of the interview described that students have improved in the field of communication and vocabulary mastery, but their need of the specific English training must be fulfilled.

Abstract

This article presents a corpus-based study that investigated grammatical collocations. The study aimed to examine and analyze grammatical collocations employed by Asian EFL learners at Khon Kaen University in Thailand. An Asian learner corpus was built with 38,338 tokens from 20 academic writing papers of Asian EFL learners. The written learner corpus consists of Thai, The Chinese, Indonesian, and The Philippines of academic papers. CLAWS tagger, AntConc (Windows 3.4.4), and manual analysis were used to analyze the data. The results of the study found that grammatical collocations employed by Asian EFL learners at Khon Kaen University were 1,941 tokens of noun + preposition, 467 tokens of verb + preposition, 147 tokens of adjective + preposition, and none of preposition + noun was used in the papers. The study also revealed that the learners used similar prepositions in the top 10 frequency, but the arrangement order was different. In addition, there were a few of the same collocated words that used by the learners from each country.

Abstract

Johnny Grammar Word Challenge Application become the test checker for students in mastering their skills of grammar. This research is aimed to determine the students’ ability and divide the students’ level of ability in using irregular verb through the application of Johnny Grammar Word Challenge on the sixth semester students of Universitas Sulawesi barat. The method used was qualitative-quantitative and the sample was drawn through random sampling. The data was collected from multiple choice test of Johnny Grammar by analyzing the data in qualitative and statically. The result shows that student’s ability in using irregular verb through Johnny Grammar Word Challenge Application categorized in “FAIRLY POOR” classification and the level of ability classified in “AVERAGE” category based on the measurement of quantitative description.
