Abstract

Native-speakerism is an ideology in foreign language teaching that believes that Native English Speaking Teachers (NESTs) have better competencies than Nonnative English Speaking Teachers (NNESTs). There are marked differences between NESTs and NNESTs in private classroom learning; for instance, the hourly fees of NESTs are much higher than NNESTs regardless of the long language teaching career. More importantly, there is hardly any research on Native-speakerism ideology from the perspective of nonnative English private tutors. This research, therefore, is conducted to give a broader conception of how NNESTs perceive the native-speakerism ideology in a private class context and contribute to the relatively unexplored area of language teaching. The data of this qualitative study were obtained through a small-scale interview with nonnative English private tutors. Results show that private learning, based on the informants' standpoints, is more oriented to making speakers able to use language skills to communicate fluently than to understand the target language culture, which NNESTs may not fully comprehend. The identity as a NEST and NNEST insignificantly affects tutors' linguistic and teaching competence. However, it significantly creates a massive gap in the teaching costs despite most NESTs' lack of classroom management skills and communication effectiveness to explain teaching materials due to language barriers.

Abstract

Abstract. In the African diaspora context, Black people have never been set free from the dark history of slavery, apartheid, othering, and marginalization. The aspiration and longing for freedom, triumph, bright future or the so-called Afrofuturism conception are finally manifested in pop culture, such as in Black Panther (2018), one of the black superhero movies. Afrofuturism emerges as a way to envision a bright future despite perennial racial discrimination against Black people. Not exclusively limited to men-empowerment, this movie puts women in the spotlight and therefore also touches on the matter of gender consciousness. For those reasons, this qualitative research aims to discuss how the Black Panther movie reflects Afrofuturism and gender consciousness and how those two are interrelated. Using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics theory as a basis for movie interpreting, the analysis of the research relies on the writer's interpretation. The analysis results show that all of Black Panther’s prominent casts exhibit Afrocentric values by being empowered and proud of their naturally typical hair, their country with unbelievably wealth and superior technology, and who they truly are as Africans. The Afrofuturism value in Black Panther encourages black generations to go far beyond the limitations of the white imagination. Furthermore, this movie does not romanticize the idea of Black male supremacy. Black women here can be professional figures in various matters, such as love life, family, work professionalism, and service to the nation to uphold what is right for themselves, their children, nation, and communities. Keywords: Afrofuturism; Black Panther movie; black people; gender consciousnessAbstrak.

Abstract

Dozens of black people die at the hands of law enforcement every year. However, the Black Lives Matter movement and racial justice protests erupted massively in 2020 in response to the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, Daniel, and many other black victims. It is not just a matter of police shooting. There is another underlying determinant that deserves a deeper investigation contributing to the big chaos last year whose impact is still being felt today. This study intends to discuss the unspoken reasons why Police brutality protests in 2020 were more tense and arousing public concern than in previous years. This study subsumed under a phenomenological study as discriminatory experiences of African-Americans become the main discussion. Further, the analysis of this qualitative study relies on the writer's interpretation. The results show that the vulnerability to the Covid-19 outbreak that began in early 2020 spread unevenly involving race and ethnicity. Black and other minority groups have suffered greater depression as cities with large black populations have become hotspots for the coronavirus and 23% of the deaths from the pandemic are black Americans. The covid-19 outbreak has aggravated the life of black Americans and is a strongly adverse determinant that plays behind the outburst of black Americans' anger at the death of their community members at the hands of police last year.

Abstract

There have been pros and cons to learning grammar concerning Second Language Acquisition. This paper aims to investigate Hospitality and Tourism (HT) students’ and workers’ perceptions of the significance of English grammar which has not been widely discussed. This article reports a mixed-method study that was conducted using an online survey and involving 50 HT students and 50 HT workers across Indonesia. Interviews with 2 Human Resource Managers of international hotel chains were also performed to provide stronger validation. The findings revealed that HT students and workers do not hold a positive perception of learning grammar and should not comprehensively learn English rules since grammar mastery will insignificantly impact employability and career performance for most positions in that sector. However, it is suggested that those in higher positions learn the 6 most commonly used tenses to avoid misunderstandings that, to some degree, link to job promotions. Results also suggest that teachers of ESP for Hospitality prioritize students’ speaking fluency, listening, and vocabulary comprehension using the CLT and PBL teaching approaches. The research results are expected to build a more positive attitude toward English learning, thus fostering a better quality of human resources in the hospitality industry.

In the entirety of human life, the feeling of insecurity has always occurred, even in fictional works. However, little is known about the study of insecurity in a character in a video game series. Therefore, this study is to analyze the insecurity of Nero, a protagonist of the Devil May Cry series gives insights on what are the causes and the types of his insecurities, and finds the true nature of Nero’s insecurity and how he deals with it. Data for the study comprised psychological research on insecurity and its causes, as well as the story of Nero. The data were transcribed and analyzed in qualitative research. The findings revealed that Nero developed his insecurities ever since he was left alone at the orphanage doorstep, being bullied by other children, the death of his adoptive brother, and being insulted by his mentor. As such, Nero develops the tendencies of being impulsive and brash whenever people he loved are in danger, as well as being arrogant and rebellious. The study also revealed that in order to deal with his insecurities, Nero seeks more power and validation that he is indeed capable of saving other people, and he is not powerless.

Abstract

The burgeoning advancement in artificial intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, has increasingly drawn attention among specialists and practitioners. This study investigates the perceptions of language teachers in Indonesia regarding ChatGPT's potential as a language learning tool and the concerns associated with its deployment. A quantitative approach was adopted, utilizing an online questionnaire comprised of 18 items rated on a four-point Likert scale and three open-ended queries. The sample included 100 educators, spanning English, Indonesian, and Mandarin language teachers and lecturers. Findings indicate that a significant proportion of respondents are familiar with internet-based artificial intelligence and recognize the applicability of ChatGPT in pedagogical contexts. Notably, 87% of language educators endorse initiatives to enhance understanding and integration of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) to bolster instructional efficiency and efficacy. Consequently, a majority concur that ChatGPT can aid language learners in honing vocabulary, grammar, oral and written competencies. Based on these insights, it is imperative for educational stakeholders to strike a judicious equilibrium between the deployment of AI tools and a pedagogical paradigm that emphasizes student engagement and critical cognitive development.
