Abstract

Recently, US surgeons successfully tested pig kidney transplants on a human patient, which surprised the medical community. This has elicited a range of responses, including among Muslim communities about whether it is permitted by Shariah or vice versa. Some Muslim scholars have stated that pigs are prohibited animals under Islamic law. In contrast, others saw this success as the most recent alternative treatment for kidney failure in recent history. This research examines the issue of transplanting pig kidneys into human bodies by maqasid al-syari'ah (hifdz al-nafs). The full qualitative method was employed based on library research to investigate the stated problems, and all the findings were analyzed descriptively. The study shows, first and foremost, that a pig is one kind of animal that is prohibited under Islamic law in any form. Two conditions must be fulfilled before the transplant of a pig's kidney into a human body can be justified: (1) it must be performed in an emergency where there is no alternative medicine or other sacred organs available; and (2) the harm resulting from the transplant itself must be less than the harm resulting from not performing the transplant. Thus, the transplantation of a pig's kidney into a human body is part of the hifdz al nafs effort to implement maqasid al dharuriyyat for the patient's survival.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the concerns surrounding cultured meat and the obstacles it presents in terms of halal issues, particularly for Muslim communities in Indonesia. The production of cultured meat is currently being heralded as one of the most significant advances of this century. Cultured meat is something that is made in a lab using techniques from bioengineering. Although it is not raised on farms like traditional meat, it shares many of the same biological similarities. This innovation still confronts several obstacles, such as the halal issue, which is still discussed by many Muslim academics, including those in Indonesia. A full qualitative method was employed, which was based on library research to investigate the stated problems, and all the findings were analyzed descriptively. The findings of the study have revealed that, despite various different arguments from Muslim academics’ perspectives regarding the halal status of cultured meat, it will be wiser if the related authorities as well as religious institutions join forces to examine the halal status of cultured meat. Once cultured meat is recognized as halal, it will provide more significant benefits, particularly for Muslim communities in Indonesia. It is also taken into consideration that cultured meat may have the ability to overcome global problems associated with the environmental implications of meat production, animal welfare, food security, as well as human health, or in other words it can offer certain mashlahah in comparison to traditional meat production.

Abstract

People with a high level of emotional intelligence can keep their feelings under control, both towards other people and towards themselves. As a result, it has been discovered that practicing gratitude can help students improve their emotional intelligence. This research aimed to investigate the connection between being grateful and having high levels of emotional intelligence among students. The investigation utilized a quantitative method and a design based on correlation. This research was carried out with the participation of 91 total students. Two scales were used in the data collection: a 15-item Emotional Intelligence Scale and the Development and Validation of the Islamic Gratitude Scale (IGS-10), created by Ahmad Rusdi in 2021 to measure thankfulness. The analysis of the data showed that gratitude and emotional quotient are positively correlated with one another. This suggests that greater levels of gratitude are connected with greater levels of emotional intelligence; hence, this demonstrates that gratitude can increase students' emotional intelligence and should be emphasized in educational settings.
