Abstract

This study discusses the absence of significant influence from music education in shaping an individual’s character. Character education itself is an education that discusses the mental and moral qualities that are unique to an individual. Ki Hajar Dewantara views music education as having the power to help Indonesian people realize a better inner and outer life, and the nature of the art of music itself is actually order and beauty. The purpose of this study is to reveal the weak influence of music education on the formation of an individual’s character. The behaviour of students and lecturers in the Department of Music Education FBS UNY was observed continuously for approximately six months. To strengthen the data, interviews were conducted face to face. The results showed that most students and lecturers who had long struggled and involved in the music field were weak in terms of discipline, social care and socializing order, and beauty. This can be seen from the behaviour of students and lecturers in carrying out daily activities, especially musical activities.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal (1) the difference in students motivation to learn music, and (2) the difference in the ability to play music between the students taught with creativity elements in learning music and those taught without them. This study employed a pretest-posttest control group design. The data were analyzed by the descriptive technique and t-test. The research subjects were Year V students of SD Negeri Sinduadi, Mlati, Sleman. The research results showed the following. (1) In the experimental group, students motivation to learn music was higher than that in the control group (tobserved = 4.330; p 0.05). It was concluded that there was a difference in students motivation to learn music between those taught with creativity elements in learning music and those taught with the conventional method. (2) In the experimental group, the ability to play music was better than that in the control group. It was concluded that there was a difference in students ability to play music between those taught with creativity elements in learning music and those taught with the conventional method.Keywords: music learning, creativity, motivation

Abstract

This study aims to find out about (a) the use of portofolios in Percussion Music Instrument practical course, (b) to find out what can be done to improve students’ ability in learning to play this instrument. This research is an action research conducted in Music education Department, Yogyakarta State University. The subjects of this research are the students of semester I and semester III who take PIM Percussion course. The data were collected through a competence test, interviews, and observation. The data analysis technique was conducted by applying the quantitative descriptive analysis method which enables the researcher to present quantitative data, and qualitative descriptive method used to describe the data from observations and interviews. The research results show that through the use of portofolios, the students’ abilities to practice to play this instrument are significantly improved in terms of psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills. This is proven with the average score gained by students of semester I, which is about 64.25 in Cycle I and 73.25 in Cycle II, and the average score gained by the students of Semester III, which is about 68 in Cycle I and 74.5 in Cycle II.

Abstract

Repertoire classes have not become a common practice in manyinformal institutions conducting guitar learning even though some formalinstitutions have done the practice. To implement repertoire classes needsappropriate time and places.Repertoire classes regularly conducted are proven to improve students’motivation to learn, decrease their nervousness and increase their selfconfidence.Besides, such classes motivate them to compete in improving theirskill and become places to socialize among them.Key words: repertoire, guitar learning and students' self confidence
