Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out  the background of Chinese ethnic as victims at the May 1998 riots of Jakarta. This study used historical research methods with the data collecting techniques used are library and documentation. The results showed that the background of Chinese ethnic as victims at the May 1998 riots of Jakarta is dominated by the economy of Chinese entrepreneurs, relation between Chinese entrepreneurs with ruler of new order, citizenship status and anti-Chinese sentiments, the assimilationist policies implementation towards Chinese ethnic, Chinese entrepreneurs corrupt practices during the economic crisis, and separate settlement.Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui latar belakang etnis Tionghoa menjadi korban pada peristiwa Kerusuhan Mei 1998 di Jakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah dengan teknik pengumpulan data kepustakaan dan  dokumentasi. Hasil analisis dan pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa yang menjadi latar belakang etnis Tionghoa menjadi korban pada peristiwa Kerusuhan Mei 1998 di Jakarta adalah pengusaha Tionghoa mendominasi perekonomian, adanya relasi antara pengusaha Tionghoa dengan penguasa Orde Baru, status kewarganegaraan dan sentimen anti-Tionghoa, implementasi kebijakan asimilasi terhadap etnis Tionghoa, praktik korupsi pengusaha Tionghoa pada saat krisis ekonomi, serta pemukiman yang terpisah.Kata kunci: jakarta, mei, tionghoa
