Abstract

Background: To assess the visual outcome before and after of cataract surgery in eyes of patients with uveitisMethods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 20 patients (20 eyes) with uveitis who underwent phacoemulsification cataract extraction or small incision cataract surgery with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation at National Eye Centre of Cicendo Eye Hospital from January 2011 to April 2012. Changes in visual outcome before and after cataract surgery during subsequent visits were analyzed. Results: A total of 20 eyes of 20 patients fulfilled the enrollment criteria for this retrospective study with an age range of 6 to 82 years mean 40,25; median, 38 . Of the patients enrolled, 75% were female and 25% were male. Of the 20 eyes enrolled in this study, 8 were normal limit in anterior and posterior segment, 10 had posterior disease and 2 had recurrent uveitis that influence visual outcome after cataract surgery. Conclusions: Phacoemulsification cataract extraction or small incisson cataract surgery with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation is safe in patients with uveitis. Cataract surgery in eyes with uveitis leads to an improvement of vision in the majority of cases. Severe postoperative uveitis is the most common postoperative complication for poor visual outcome after surgery. Posterior disease had influence in visual outcome after cataract surgery.
