Abstract

This study focuses on children's popular fairy tales which are indicated to carry gender issues in the elements of story building. This study aims to: (1) identify gender issues that are subtly aired through popular children's fairy tales; and (2) know the role of parents in dealing with gender issues. This study applied a qualitative method using three popular children's tales as a source of data, namely Putri Salju dan Tujuh Kurcaci, Bawang Merah Bawang Putih, and Keong Mas. The results of the study indicate that several gender issues are subtly exhaled concerning gender bias which is not yet suitable for consumption by childhood. Therefore, the function of parents as guides and filters of children's reading sources is very important so that they can make fairy tales as a means of character education and ignore the elements of the story that are not by their character education and character formation.

Abstract

Manipulation of language used in poems to state poet’s idea is basically aimed to give aesthetic value, help the readers to easily understand, and give complete image of the text meaning. However, in a real application in the classroom, the language style in poems causes language deviation and covers the poet’s idea. Readers should read the poems explisitly in deep interpretation to get the meaning. Therefore, this study describes an eight-week (135 minutes a week) poem stylistics of semantic deviation analysis for a half –semester beginning training course (poetry class) for the use of literature in an EFL context. The research was conducted at the fourth semester students of English Program of IAIN Bengkulu in academic year 2017/2018 that consisted of 31 students. This descriptive analysis aimed to describe students’ exploration of semantic deviation in classical poem interpretation. The result showed that Wordsworth’s The Solitary Reaper used various kinds of semantic deviation in forms of language stylistics of figurative languages, namely: (1) semantic Bizarreness of expression that consisted of oxymoron and paradox; (2) transference of meaning that consisted of synecdoche, metonymy and metaphor; (3) Misrepresent the truth that consisted of hyperbole and irony. In a real analysis of the poem, the students were excellent in identyfying the kinds of language deviations. Then, they were very good at understanding the poem literally. However, they had problems in interpreting the poet’s real meaning through semantic deviation used in the poem because they needed more experience about lingistic, social and historical background knowledge of classical England, and biography of the poet.

Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) sejauh mana transformasi film Sense and Sensibility karya Jane Austen merefleksikan kondisi sosial dan budaya masyarakat pada zamannya; dan (2) bagaimana penerimaan masyarakat (penonton) terhadap film ini. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif (strukturalisme) dengan pendekatan sosiologi sastra. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) gambaran masyarakat Inggris pada tahun 1792-1797 tidak berbeda jauh dengan gambaran yang disuguhan film Sense and Sensibility, yaitu penerapan tradisi primogeniture. Tradidi ini memicu kaum laki-laki dan perempuan bersifat materialistis sehingga kualitas kebaikan yang dimiliki seseorang tidak akan menjadi pertimbangan yang baik pula dalam menemukan pasangan hidup karena kebiasaan masyarakat di sana menganggap uang, kedudukan, dan status sosial sebagai pertimbangan terpenting dalam mencari pasangan hidup; (2) film Sense and Sensibility memperoleh sambutan hangat oleh apresiator dari berbagai negara secara lugas sehingga dapat memberikan gambaran yang memadai mengenai ‘popularitas’ Sense and Sensibility sebagai film.
