Abstract

Conflict between human and elephants in Tesso Nilo National Park encourages WWF to establish the Flying Squad. Related to the function of the sumatran elephants in Flying Squad as the patrol team, it is necessary to conduct a proper management to ensure animal welfare. This study aims to examine the aspects of welfare management and asses the level of welfare of sumatran elephants in Flying Squad. The research methodology used for this study are literature review, interviews and field observation. Data analyzed by describing the suitability of management and tabulating the assessment. The management of cages, feed, health and reproduction requires some improvements such as the type, number and equipment of the cages, natural feed adequacy, medical infrastructure and reproduction management. The 76,98% percentage rate of sumatran elephant welfare, which is relatively good, is because there are only 14 priority components of 43 components of animal welfare assessment that need improvements and enhanced management. Keywords: animal welfare, flying squad, the patrol elephant

Abstract

Land-use change from a rubber plantation into the ITERA campus area causes an ecological transition. The components of ecology affected are vegetation and wildlife (bird). Geographic information systems can be used to assess the condition of vegetation and its relation to the ecological component. This study analyses bird diversity, vegetation condition through the NDVI value distribution, and then analyses the bird distribution based on vegetation condition. Observation in transect is the method for collecting bird distribution data. Analyses of vegetation condition was carried out based on NDVI. Analyses of bird distribution based on vegetation condition was carried out spatially by overlaying thematic maps of vegetation with bird distribution. This research found 28 bird species belonging to 18 families with diversity index (H’) 1.84. The highest abundance species were Lonchura punctulata, Passer montanus, and Hirundo tahitica. The NDVI values ranged from -0.64-0.87. ITERA vegetation conditions are divided into five classes: very rare vegetation (VRV), rare vegetation (RV), m vegetation (MV), dense vegetation class (DVC), and very dense vegetation (VDV). Total encounters with birds in this study were 753. The distribution of birds to the vegetation conditions in ITERA has a higher tendency and diverse vegetation have implications of birds to use the vegetation. In the VRV class, there were 4 encounters, RV 37, MV 157, DVC 235, and VDV 315. Also, the number of bird species tends to increase along with the increasing vegetation value. Lonchura punctulata is a bird with the highest abundance in each vegetation class, followed by Passer montanus and Pycnonotus aurigaster. Abstract

Land use change of rubber plantation into ITERA campus area has led to changes in the ecology of the area. Amphibians and reptiles, referred as Herpetofauna, are categorized as wild animals that are sensitive to environmental changes and are considered as bio-indicators. Wild conservation activities including herpetofauna is an essential part to the forest campus concept in ITERA. The objective of the study is to analyze the diversity and distribution of herpetofauna. This applied Visual Encounter Survey (VES) with Time Constraint Method and Glue Trap technique. This research was carried out on six observation path and 180 traps. The ecological index analysis consisted of species diversity, evenness, richness, abundance, and community similarity. Twenty-two herpetofauna species were found, including nine amphibians (5 families) and 13 reptiles (9 families). There was one reptile species with vulnerable conservation status and 3 reptile species included in CITES appendix II. The diversity index value (H ') was 2.29; species evenness (E) value was 0.74; and species richness value was 3.33. Amphibian species with the highest abundance was Fejervarya cancrivora 1.78 individual/hour of observer, while from the reptile species was Hemidactylus frenatus 0.35 individual/hour of observer. There were 550 herpetofauna encounters, where 8 species could be found on all transects and 6 species could only be found on one transect. This research showed that the condition of ITERA habitat currently supported herpetofauna's life and needed conservation activities to maintain herpetofauna diversity.
