Abstract

This research discusses traces of colonialism resulting from the meeting of Dutch and Chinese cultures in the short story Ruma Sekolah yang Saye Impiken by Kwee Tek Hoay. The research focust to describe the colonial’s effects of the diaspora, mimicry and ambivalence carried out by the Chinese community. Methods of data collection used literature study with reading-note techniques, data analysis using descriptive methods. Homi K. Bhaba's postcolonial theory was used to analyze the diaspora, mimicry, and ambivalence that occurred in Chinese society. The results and discussion found that cultural contact between the colonial (Dutch) and the colonized (Chinese) resulted in traces of colonial diaspora, mimicry, and ambivalence carried out by the Chinese community. These colonial traces then gave birth to a new identity for the stronger Chinese community. The presence of characters in the narrative who carry out mimicry and ambivalence also becomes a form of their resistance to identity discourses built by the Dutch. Through this short story, the writer (Hoay) implicitly fought against the Dutch in Indonesian at that time.

Abstract

This study aims to classifying and analyze the aspects mental disorders of mourning and melancholia and the destructive effects in the character Ella Marchmill in short story by Thomas Hardly. An Imaginative Woman is a short story, where the main character has a libidinal cathexis that she loves, and feels that this figure has becomes her soulmate. However, over time her libidinal cathexis disappeared and its made Ella has depression and melancholy mental disorders. The theory that will be used psychoanalytic theory, Mourning and Melancholia theory by Sigmund Freud. The method used is a descriptive qualitative research method by analyzing data in the form of words, phrases, dialogues, etc. from Ella Marchmill’s characters. The results of the research prove that: 1) The character of Ella Marchmill in the short story An Imaginatie Woman has aspects of mourning and melancholia mental disorders, such as prolonged depression, abnormal emotions, etc. 2) This mental disorder (mourning and melancholia) also has a destructive effect Ella's character (Internal effect) and on Ella's husband and children (External effect).AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengklasifikasi dan menganalisis aspek-aspek gangguan kejiwaan mourning dan melancholia serta efek destruktif yang di alami oleh tokoh Ella Marchmill dalam cerpen An Imaginative Woman karya Thomas Hardly. An Imaginative Woman adalah sebuah cerpen, dimana tokoh utamanya memiliki sosok libidinal cathexis yang di cintai, dan merasa bahwa sosok itu telah menjadi satu dengan jiwanya. Namun, seiring berjalannya waktu libidinal cathexis-nya hilang sehingga hal ini membuat Ella mengalami depresi yang berkepanjangan dan mengakibatkan dirinya mengalami gangguan kejiwaan melancholia. Teori yang akan digunakan adalah teori psikoanalisis mourning dan melancholia dari Sigmund Freud, serta metode yang akan digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif yaitu dengan menganalisis data-data yang berupa kata, frasa, dialog, dll dari tokoh Ella Marchmill. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa: 1) Tokoh Ella Marchmill dalam cerpen An Imaginatie Woman memiliki aspek-aspek gangguan kejiwaan mourning dan melancholia, seperti depresi yang berkepanjangan, emosi yang abnormal, dll. 2) Gangguan  kejiwaan ini juga memiliki efek destruktif yang dialami tokoh Ella (Efek Internal) dan yang dialami oleh suami Ella dan anaknya (Efek Eksternal).
