Abstract

There are many improvements and developments in educational teories. In the with the course of the world, there is dialectical process in its affairs. Many philosophers and educators tends to compete to produce "the best" theory of education. This fact begins since a long time ago when Greek Philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristoteles lead the world. Abstract

This study describes the gratitude strategies realized by Indonesian EFL learners in responding to different situations. Data were collected from 17 undergraduate students of English Department of Education Faculty of Atmajaya Catholic University Jakarta by using (O’Keeffe et.al, 2011) Discourse Completion Tasks. This study revealed that the gratitude strategies employed by the participants of this study ranged from simple, brief thankings to lenghty, complex thankings. All participants produced mixed speect act sets of thanking in the following conditions: a) social status (between a vice-president and a newly hired personnel, b) indebtedness (because of money loan and meal treat), and c) breaking promise. On the other hand, in informal contexts, such as between friends and the setting of public area, the participants tended to use simple or brief thanking.

Abstract

Abstrak:Tulisan ini membahas tentang pengaruh Bahasa Prancis terhadap Bahasa Inggris. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa sejarah lahirnya Bahasa Inggris tidak terlepas dari asal muasal peminjaman kosa kata dari bahasa lain, misalnya Bahasa Prancis. Sebagaian dari stok kosa kata Bahasa Inggris moderen berasal dari atau meminjam vocabulary Bahasa Prancis. Kata-kata pinjaman atau loanwords tersebut berkaitan dengan berbagai bidang seperti hubungan dan kedudukan sosial masyarakat, fashion, seni dan sastra, politik, pendidikan, makanan, hukum, pemerintahan dan administrasi, dll. Pengaruh budaya Prancis tercermin dalam sebagian kosa kata yang terdapat dalam Bahasa Inggris akibat pengaruh penjajahan beberapa abad yang lalu. Kata kunci: Role of French Language, -History of English.

Abstract

Tulisan ini mencoba mengungkapkan pemanfaatan teks-teks berbahasa Inggris guna membantu pembelajar Bahasa Inggris dalam memahami kohesi leksikal. Data diambil dari koran The Jakarta Post, khususnya kolom News Highlights. Kohesi leksikal selalu muncul dalam setiap teks. Mengenal kohesi leksikal, khususnya dalam teks berbahasa Inggris penting guna memahami teks secara utuh. Penting terutama untuk pembelajar bahasa Inggris karena bahasa ini seringkali memanfaatkan kohesi leksikal yangt rekat dalam teks-teksnya. Media cetak berbahasa Inggris dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai sumber belajar memahami hubungan-hubungan leksikal seperti sinonim dan antonim.

Abstract

Individuals with disabilities learn with difficulties such as physical, emotional, mental, and social deficiencies. In a limited physical and mental condition, they are faced with problems in learning, particularly in learning English. This study aims at revealing practices and obstacles in learning English in an intellectual disability classroom that affected the teaching practices. A case study method was used in this study. This study's participants were two teachers at SLB-C Tuna Grahita Palembang selected by a typical sampling technique. The observation and interview were used to collect data regarding realized practices and obstacles in teaching English to students with intellectual disabilities. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study results indicated that English language teaching practices in intellectual disability classrooms were similar to the regular ones but more oriented to students' needs. The obstacles of English language teaching were affected by intellectual disability students' limitations in writing, reading, speaking, listening skills, and heterogeneous ability.

Abstract

The online learning delivery method is increasingly used in the teaching and learning process at universities. This type of learning is relatively new to students, in particular to Indonesian EFL students. Students' learning autonomy in an online learning system is inevitably required. Autonomy in online learning and in offline learning can be differently perceived by the students. This study aimed at revealing EFL students' perception on learning autonomy in an online learning method. A questionnaire was used as the single instrument to obtain data from 35 students of the English Education Study Program of Tarbiyah and Teacher Education Faculty, State Islamic University Raden Fatah Palembang. The study sample was selected using opportunity sampling, and data were analyzed using a simple percentage statistic formula. The study results indicated that the majority of the students perceive online learning as independent learning in which they must have self-learning awareness and motivation, self-learning responsibility, and self-directed and governed learning. They also perceived that they could develop the problem-solving ability, critical thinking, and learning initiative in autonomous online learning. In the context of learning independently in an online learning system, self-time management is also essential to support their learning optimally.

Abstract

Objective. This study deals with the use of online teaching of English for librarians using WhatsApp voice notes. This study aimed at figuring out the students’ perspectives regarding the implementation of WhatsApp voice notes in teaching English for Librarian courses and investigating to what extent WhatsApp voice is contributing to their speaking skills. Material and Method. Four examples of dialogue in a library context were used in practice involving 68 students taking English as a Librarian subject. The instrument used to collect data for the study was a questionnaire survey and coding and summarizing were used to analyze the data. Results. The result of the study showed that the highest percentage (84%) of the participants perceived speaking interchange via voice note as a more helpful way of making and reinforcing their speaking fluency. Independent practice and replayed recordings make their speaking fluency reinforced. The result also showed that the voice notes recordings of their speaking become valuable self-assets for their speaking practice in the library context (76%) and help them recognize new vocabulary and pronunciation in library science (67%). Conclusion. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that WhatsApp voice note is a useful tool to provide students with opportunities to speak using voice note as an alternative media, to trigger and train student’ self-speaking skill.

Abstract

Borrowing words from other languages is a linguistic phenomenon. Word borrowing occurred as a result of contact between two languages or more. Words or a single word taken from a foreign language such as English can be found both in spoken and written forms of communication. English is the most important linguistic source from which its words are borrowed by Bahasa Indonesia (BI). This qualitative study aims at analyzing syntactical positions of originally single word borrowing from English. Data of the study are in the forms of originally English single word categories such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs collected from a popular novel book entitled My Stupid Boss 3 and 4 published by Gradien Mediatama. Purposive sampling technique was used to collect data involving the selection of those data that suit the purposes of the analysis. Data were analyzed by way of explaining purposively selected data. The results indicated that single parts of speech such as noun, adjevtive, verb, and adverb existing in the construction of BI follow the syntactical rules of the language. In conclusion, the process of borrowing these originally single word categories from English is governed by syntactical rules of the language. Abstract

Skripsi ini membahas tentang Strategi Dinas Perpustakaan dan Kearsipan Kota Lubuk Linggau dalam Pemberdayaan Minat Baca Masyarakat Kelurahan Siderejo dengan menggunakan Analisis SWOT. Adapun yang melatar belakangi skripsi ini karena minat baca dikeleruhan siderejo terbilang rendah di Kota Lubuklinggau lalu pada saat dinas perpustakaan kota lubuk linggau berkunjung disana masyarakat Siderejo itu ternyata tertarik mengenai literasi. Oleh karena dibutuhkan strategi untuk menumbuhkan minat baca dikelurahan Siderejo. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi dan kendala dalam Pemberdayaan Minat Baca Masyarakat Kelurahan Siderejo dengan menggunakan Analisis SWOT. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah wawancara, observasi dan kajian pustaka. Populasi dari penelitian ini yaitu seluruh orang yang bekerja di lingkunganDinas Perpustakaan dan kearsipan Kota Lubuklinggau dan kelurahan siderejo yang berjumlah 39 orang. Sampel pada penelitian ini peneliti menentukan menggunakan teknik purposive samplingyang mana kriteria peneliti ambil yaitu yang ahli dibidang pengembangan dan pembinaan dan informan dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 5 orang. Berdasarkan analisis SWOT hasil dari penelitian ini kekuatan internal yaitu: kelurahan merespon dengan baik, masyarakat disana juga merspon dengan baik dan pelayanan perpustakaan juga diberikan cukup bagus. Kelemahan internal yaitu: tidak adanya bahan pustaka dan perlatan lainnya. Dari kekuatan eksternal dinas peprustakaan dan kearsipan kota lubuklinggau bersedia membina dalam meningkatkan minat baca. Kelemahan eksternal yaitu: susahnya membuat jadwal kunjungan karena masa pandemi adapun strategi dalam meningkatkan minat baca yaitu: perpustakaan keliling, pembinaan kepada masyarakat, mempromosikan i pustaka. Hambatan yang dialami ialah kurangnya fasilitas yang diberikan hal ini dikarenakan kebijakan dari kelurahan tersebut.
