Abstract

Treating gaharu (Aquilaria microcarpa) seedlings with inorganic fertilizers is essential to obtain vigorous seeds with high adaptability for establishment on the field. The aims of this research were to find out the effect of fertilization on the survival and growth rate of Aquilaria microcarpa seedlings and to identify appropriate dosage of fertilizer that could increase the growth optimally. Complete Random Design was employed with two treatments i.e. using root fertilizer (Urea, TSP, KCL) with 5 dosage levels and using leaf fertilizer (Gandasil D and Bayfolan) with 7 dosage levels. Data was analyzed by using statistic descriptive and analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. The parameters used were seedling survival rate, height increase and number of leaves. The result showed that the two fertilizers could increase survival rate of the seedling. However, higher dosage of root fertilizer was followed by lower survival rate. The treatment using root fertilizer had a significant effect on the number of leaves, whereas treatment using leaf fertilizer had a significant effect on the increase of the seedling height. Adding leaf fertilizer is considered more useful in terms of survival and growth rate.

Abstract

The research was conducted to understand seed germination and seedling growth of Artocarpus altissimus. The experimental design used was completely randomized with 2 factors, i.e. seed storability and media factors for the response capacity of germination, media and NPK fertilizer factors for seedling growth response (height and number of leaves). The result showed that A. altissimus seeds had long enough storability/ potential age without a period of dormancy. Storability, media and interaction both showed very significant effect on the germination capacity with the highest mean value on the storability category of 3 and 1 month and media category of compost and sand. On variable of seedlings height, NPK fertilizer showed significant effect, media and interaction of media and NPK had very significant effect with the best factor category was a media category of TSKn (soil, chaff and manure).

Abstract

Heritiera javanica is a timber tree species and their natural regeneration is scanty, thus propagation of this species is urgently required. This research was aimed to identify the effect of shade intensity and growth media on the survival rate and growth of seedlings. Experi- mental design used was completely randomized with two factors, namely the shade intensity and the media that consisted of several cate- gories. Parameters measured were survival rate and seedlings growth; height, number of leaves, and number of roots. Survival rate was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Seedlings growth (height, number of leaves, and number of roots) were estimated by using analysis of variance. Results showed that treatments using categories of several media categories that were placed in the shade of 25%, 50%, and 85% had a high survival rate. In addition, seedlings that were placed in 50% shade grew better and optimally. Media of TK (soil + compost), TS (soil + chaff), and TSPk (soil + manure + chaff) that were placed on the 50% shade showed the best result to height of seedlings growth. Reintroduction needs to be done for the enrichment of H. javanica populations in nature.
