Abstract

Abstract This study is about student teachers’ basic teaching skills especially in delivering gaining attention, presenting stimulus materials, and assessing performance. The purposes of this study is to find out whether or not student teachers’ skill in gaining attention, presenting stimulus materials, and assessing performance. Was developed during their teaching practice period. To achieve the first purpose, the data were collected through observations and interviews. The obervation was conducted during student teachers’ teaching-learning sessions. The interviews was conducted to support the data from interview. The source for interview was student teachers’ mentor teachers. The result of this study was that two of four student teachers had developed their teaching skills in gaining attention while the other two did not develop their skills. This study has showed that besides students’ ability, willingness and support from mentor teachers and peers are needed to develop their teaching skills Key words: basic teaching skills, student teacher, teaching practice, gaining attention, presenting stimulus materials, and assessing performance.

Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on error analysis of second year students from four classes of English department at Universitas Swadaya Gunung Jati Cirebon. A total of one hundred and four of enrolled students participated. They were asked to interview someone about his or her profession and personal life and write the report in three paragraphs. Both interview and report writing conducted in group of three or four. Data collected from interlingua and intralingua  categories and were analyzed to find the most frequent error of these students. The frequent error is obtained by calculating the number of error from each category and presented in form of percentage. The findings show that the most frequent error is from the interlingua aspect which is the selection of wrong word in the case of divergence between L1 and L2 (50%). The result will be beneficial for selecting treatment so that the students can improve their mastery of English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the concept of psychic impulses in the characters in the novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical working mechanism. The approach used is a literary psychology approach. The data collection technique applied is documentation. The data analysis activities consist of data reduction, data presentation, and concluding/verification. The results of the study indicate that there is an impetus that drives or underlies the behaviour of each character. Interaction between characters leads to encouragement, namely encouragement that comes from the spiritual aspect, encouragement to fulfil desires without regard to values, and encouragement that is influenced by news in the mass media. Changes in the character of the antagonist are influenced by the behaviour of practising the Qur'an and hadith by the main character. Thus, reflected in the pattern of the relationship between individual history, goals, and aspirations of individuals to the behaviour of the characters.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan konsep dorongan psikis pada tokoh dalam novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan mekanisme kerja deskriptif analitik. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan psikologi sastra. Teknik pengumpulan data yang diaplikasikan adalah dokumentasi. Aktivitas analisis data tersebut terdiri atas reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan/verifikasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dorongan yang menggerakkan atau melatarbelakangi perilaku setiap tokoh. Interaksi antartokoh mengarah pada adanya dorongan, yakni dorongan yang berasal dari aspek spiritualitas, dorongan memenuhi keinginan tanpa memperhatikan nilai-nilai, dan dorongan yang dipengaruhi oleh pemberitaan di media massa. Perubahan karakter tokoh antagonis dipengaruhi perilaku pengamalan Al-Qur’an dan hadis oleh tokoh utama. Dengan demikian, tercermin adanya pola hubungan antara sejarah individu, tujuan, dan aspirasi individu terhadap perilaku tokoh.

Abstract

This paper reports anxieties experiences in tasks completion in speaking activities. Following exploratory case study, the study took place at a private university in Indonesia. Three female EFL university students were recruited and participated in the research project based on the voluntarily basis principle. In garnering the data, journal reflection and interview were employed to evaluate participants’ sense of anxieties toward the speaking project. The findings reveal the students’ anxieties occurred during the English speaking because lack of preparation. At the end, research implication and recommendation are presented and discussed

Abstract

This study focuses on the classroom management problems of pre-service teachers during teaching practice and how they apply teaching strategies to overcome those problems. The method used is a qualitative narrative inquiry with data sources that have been collected through a questionnaire, documents evidence and interviews. Data analysis for this study used thematic analysis. The results of the analysis found that classroom management problems are one of the difficulties and challenges for pre-service teachers. The setting of strategies in lesson planning and managing in the classroom is really needs to be considered by pre-service teachers to achieve the learning goals. Efforts that can be made with the help of using pre-service teachers when facing classroom management problems are designing the teaching strategies and pre-service teachers need to provide motivation, instruction and pay attention to student behavior.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that cause students' speaking anxiety and how to overcome students' speaking anxiety. This research is qualitative research with data collection techniques using observation, questionnaires and interviews. The participants of this study were 11th grade high school students. The results revealed several factors that cause anxiety in students such as: (1) the students felt embarrassed by being marked with anxiety when talking to other people; (2) the students felt anxious when they were about to face a foreign language speaking exam; and (3) finally the students felt anxious about the opinions or judgments of others when speaking in English in front of the class. It was also found several ways that the students used to reduce students' speaking anxiety such as: (1) the students must prepare in advance such as practicing speaking; (2) the students took a breath to feel relaxed; (3) the students thought positively and looked for peers to share things with each other in order to reduce anxiety.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the students’ preferences and perceptions toward implicit corrective feedback on their speaking performance. This research is qualitative case study research with data collection techniques using observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The participants of this study were 12th-grade, high school students. The author found the most preferred types and timing in the corrective feedback implementation such as: Recast CF, and Immediate CF as the method to correct the errors in their speaking performance given by the teacher. Researchers also found that students have positive perceptions toward implicit corrective feedback. Most participants prefer to be corrected by their teacher when they make an error in their speaking performance.
