Abstract

Figurative language is one of the linguistic devices that are used in the writing or speech to make language more beautiful, impactful, and interesting. The researcher chooses this topic because figurative language is very unique and tricky compared to the literal language. The problems of this research are What are the figurative languages found in Talk on Corners Album by The Corrs? and What is the most dominant figurative language found in Talk on Corners Album by The Corrs?. This research has two aims, they are to find out the figurative language found in Talk on Corners Album by The Corrs and to find out the most dominant figurative language found in Talk on Corners Album by The Corrs. Qualitative method is used in this research. Perrine theory about figurative language is use to analyzed the data that were taken from Talk on Corners Album by The Corrs. The results show that 44 data were found. Out of 44 data, 13 (29,5 %) are metaphor, 2 (4,5 %) are simile, 7 (16,0 %) are personification, 3 (6,8 %) are paradox, 1 (2,3 %) are symbol, 10 (22,7 %) are into allegory, and 8 (18,2 %) are hyperbole. The most dominant figurative language found is metaphor.

Abstract

Collocation is a combination of words in a language that happens very often and more frequently than it would happen by chance. The writer chooses this topic because collocation is a serious problem for most Indonesian students. The problems of this research are (1) What are the equivalents of English preposition + noun collocation in Indonesian?, (2) Which preposition + noun collocations are congruent identified in the Oxford Collocation Dictionary for Students of English?, (3) Which preposition + noun collocations are incongruent identified in the Oxford Collocation Dictionary for Students of English?. The aims in this research are (1) To find out the equivalents of the sentences containing English preposition + noun collocations in Indonesian. (2) To find out the congruent preposition + noun collocations from the data found in the Oxford Collocation Dictionary for Student of English. (3) To find out the incongruent preposition + noun collocations from the data found in the Oxford Collocation Dictionary for Student of English. The source of the data was Oxford Collocations Dictionary for Students of English. The number of collocations taken as the sample of the data was 2050 English preposition + noun collocations. Qualitative and Quantitative methods are used in this research. The results of this research are (1) the result of the translation shows congruent, incongruent, and non-collocation, (2) 401(19,56%) congruent collocations “preposition + noun” are found, (3) 1584 (77,27%)incongruent collocations “preposition + noun” are found, (4) 65 (3,17%) non-collocations are found.

Abstract

Figurative language is the linguistic devices that are used in order to make language more beautiful and interesting. The aims of this research are to find out the figurative languages found in Hello My Name Is Album by Bridgit Mendler and to find out the most dominant figurative language found in Hello My Name Is Album by Bridgit Mendler. This research used qualitative research method. This research used the theory of figurative language from Kennedy & Dana (1995). The data source of this research is Hello My Name Is Album. The data of this research is the lyrics that have figurative language in it. Out of 47 data found in this research, 14 data are simile, 10 data are metaphor, 11 data are personification, 7 data are overstatement, 2 data are metonymy, 1 data is synecdoche, 2 data are paradox. Based on the data collected, simile is the most dominant figurative language found in Hello My Name Is Album.

Abstract

Translation is the process of transferring the meaning from the source language to the target language. The objective of this research is to find out the translation strategies found in Jasa Burung Pipit and its translation The Good Deed of The Sparrow. This research used qualitative research method. The theory used is the translation strategies form Chesterman. The result showed that there are 6 translation strategies were found. They are literal translation (18 data), loan, calque (2 data), clause structure change (1 data), cohesion change (3 data), synonymy (6 data) and distribution change (12 data). Based on the data collected, literal translation strategy is the most dominant translation strategy used.

Abstract

Code-mixing is the process of mixing or switching between one language to another language during the conversation. The aims of this research are to find out the type of code-mixing used in Najwa Shihab Video Muda Bersuara Part 1 – Part 3 and to find out the reason why code-mixing used in Najwa Shihab Video Muda Bersuara Part 1 – Part 3. The source of the data in this research are Najwa Shihab Video Muda Bersuara Part 1 – Part 3. Descriptive qualitative research method is used in this research. To achieve the result of this research, the researcher uses the theory about types of code-mixing from Muysken and the theory about the reason of why code-mixing is used by Hoffman. The result shows that there are 77 data. 41 data are categorized as insertion, 1 data is categorized as alternation and 35 data are categorized as congruent lexicalization. Meanwhile, 4 types of reason are found, they are talking about particular topic (49 data), being emphatic about something (23 data), repetition used for clarification (3 sata), and clarifying the speech content for interlocutor (2 data).

Abstract

Subtitling is the process of transferring the equal meaning of what is being said in the movie as a source language into the target language. The product of its process is called as subtitle. The aims of this research are to find out the types of subtitling strategy applied in the interrogative sentence in Vivo movie and to found out the most frequent subtitling strategy applied in the interrogative sentence in Vivo movie. The source of the data in this research is Vivo movie while the data are the interrogative sentence in Vivo movie. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research method. Gottlieb’s theory is applied in this research. The result shows that out of 92 found, 7 subtitling strategies are applied in Vivo movie, they are expansions (2), paraphrases (14), transfers (51), imitations (8), condensations (7), decimations (5), and deletions (5). The most frequent subtitling strategy used is transfer.
