Abstract

Background: Chemical trauma is one of the emergency cases in ophthalmology since it can lead to severe, permanent blindness if not immediately treated. This study aimed to reveal pre- and post-therapy visual acuity on patients with chemical trauma at theNational Eye Center, Cicendo Eye Hospital, Bandung. Methods: This study was performed on 40 patients’ medical records from the National Eye Center, Cicendo Eye Hospital Bandung from January 2010 to January 2011 as secondary data, using the descriptive retrospective method. The data were divided into two groups: acid and alkali trauma. The collected data were analyzed and presented in tables. Results: Chemical trauma cases were mostly caused by caustic soda (17/40) whereas the least were caused by vinegar (3/40) and commonly occurred on adult patients in the right eye on alkali trauma. Patients with chemical trauma generally had normal eyesight before therapy. The number of patients with acid and alkali trauma who experienced improved eyesight after therapy alkali were similar (3 patients) while  worsening symptoms occurred  in one patient with alkali chemical trauma from mild to medium  low vision. Conclusions: There are some improvements of visual acuity after treatment in patients with chemical injuries. DOI: 10.15850/amj.v2n3.482

Abstract

Background: The number of motor vehicles usage is increasing every year, along with the increasing prevalence of motor vehicle accidents, and mortality due to traffic accidents in 2010. The driver’s visual impairment is one factor that affects this phenomenon. In Indonesia there are regulations regarding the minimum requirements for visual acuity in order to get a driving license. However, data of driver’s visual acuity have not been obtained yet. This study aimed to assess the public transport (angkot) driver’s visual acuity. Thus, the regulation and evaluation of the minimum requirements for a driver’s visual acuity can be applied optimally. Methods: This study used the categorical descriptive method with cross sectional design to assess visual acuity for four-wheeled motor vehicle (angkot) drivers in Jatinangor using RAAB E chart and pinhole. The variable that was described in this study was the visual acuity of 4-wheeled motor vehicle drivers in Jatinangor. Results: Results showed 86.5% of drivers fulfilled the minimum requirements of visual acuity for driving. Meanwhile, the rest did not fulfill the minimum requirements of visual acuity for driving. Conclusions: Most of the public transport drivers have already fulfilled the minimum requirement of visual acuity for driving. However the minimum requirement of visual acuity for drivers has not been implemented optimally since there were drivers who have not performed an eye examination when taking and extending their driving license.

Abstract

Background: Prevalence of blindness in West Java province according to RAAB survey is 2.8% withconfidence interval 2.0-3.5%, and cataract is the main cause with the proportion of 77.1%. It meansthere are 257,600 blind people of 50 and above, 198,609 of them have cataract blindness. In the termof cataract problems, West Java government has been implementing the prevention of blindness andlow vision program since 2005, but backlog of cataract is still high. Lots of barriers on cataract surgicalservices program come from provider and population. Five main kind of barriers come from populationare costs, distance, social and culture, community awareness, and trust to provider. Information ofbarriers is important for program planning to overcome the barriers. The purpose of this research is toreport the barriers of cataract surgical services program in West Java province according to RAABsurvey. Methods: This study is West Java population-based cross sectional study using Rapid Assessment ofAvoidable Blindness (RAAB) protocol, with multistage cluster sampling that was conducted in 2014.Results: Cataract blindness prevalence was 0.8% (95% CI 0.2-1.3%) for male and 2.2% (95% CI 1.4-2.9%) for female. Cataract surgery was performed more in male (44.1%) than female (25.8%). Mainbarriers in male group of cost, need no felt, fear, and unaware of treatment are possible; while thebarriers in female group were cost and fear. An unaware of the treatment is possible. Conclusion: The barriers of cataract surgical services in West Java were cost, need no felt, fear, andunaware of the treatment are possible. We need to manage the cost and increase community awarenessand willingness of cataract surgery to encounter the problem cataract blindness and visual impairmentin West Java province.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction & Objectives : One of the main therapies used to treat amblyopia in the dominant eye is occlusion therapy. When used on the dominant eye during activities, eye patches can lead to quality of life issues include visual, cosmetic, and psychosocial disorders. To improve visual acuity in the suppressed eye and stop a progressive loss of visual acuity, therapy must be followed. An important factor affecting a child's compliance with occlusion therapy is parental support. Parental negativity affects children's level of support, and as a result, a decreased compliance. This research aimed to determine the relationship between quality of life and the perspectives of parents and children receiving occlusion therapy. Methods : This is a correlation study with a cross-sectional design. Fifty-one subjects were addressed in the amblyopia children's group and fifty-one subjects in the parents’ group. Every participant was directly interviewed. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between the results of interviews with children and their parents. Results : There is a decrease in the quality of life in children undergoing therapy, both from the perspective of the child and their parents. The decline in the quality of life that occurs in children is not as low as parents think. The results of the questionnaires for the children and their parents in total demonstrated a significant correlation (p = 0.0001) and a moderately positive correlation (R = 0.598). Conclusion : There is a positive correlation between children and parents in assessing the quality of life due to occlusion therapy.
