Abstract

The purposes of this research are to find out the types of politeness strategies used to save the face of the characters in Once Upon A Time season 1 and to identify the dominant scale of social dimensions when using politeness strategies in Once Upon A Time season 1. This research uses qualitative-descriptive analysis method and to get the data needed in this research the writer did the following steps: watching the movies, transcribing the speech, searching the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data and drawing a conclusion related to the types of politeness strategies and the dominant scale of social dimensions. The source of the data used is taken from the serial film Once Upon A Time season 1 by Edward Kitsis dan Adam Horowitz. The results of this research show that there are four types of politeness strategies found in the serial film Once Upon A Time season 1. They are 10 data of bald on-record (28,6%), 8 data of positive politeness strategies (22,9%), 13 data of negative politeness strategies (37,1%) and 4 data of off-record consists (11,4%) and the most dominant scale of four social dimension scales is social distance scale 14 data (40%).

Abstract

As technology advances, traditional games are becoming less common, and children are spending more time indoors with digital devices. This shift raises concerns about the impact on a child's physical, social, and emotional development. Based on these facts, this Community Service program was held with the aim of increasing the understanding and awareness of Early Childhood Education (PAUD) teachers about traditional games in building early childhood character. This activity was carried out by involving 100 PAUD teachers in Cikaum Subdistrict, Subang. This program begins with the distribution of questionnaires to see preliminary data related to the understanding and awareness of ECCE teachers regarding the use of traditional games as one of the supports for the process of teaching and learning activities in the classroom, especially with its relation to building children's character. Data shows that the majority of ECCE teachers in Cikaum Subdistrict, Subang quite understand and realize the benefits of traditional games in shaping children's character. This is supported by data where 100% of participants apply traditional games in the process of teaching and learning activities in the classroom

Abstract

This Community Service activity aims to provide training and testing of Test  of English As A Foreign Language (TOEFL Like) to students of Wiyata Indonesia Institute of Management (IMWI) Sukabumi, West Java. TOEFL is a form of English language skills competence that must be possessed by students as a requirement for trial or graduation and provision to enter the world of work. The participants of this activity are second and fourth semester students. The method of implementing this activity consists of several stages, namely the initial stage in the form of observation and filling out questionnaires to find out the background of participants, followed by an introduction to the material and practice questions to identify participants' understanding of TOEFL and the form of questions tested which include listening, structure and written expressions and reading comprehension. The next stage, students are given TOEFL simulations and multimedia interactive practice and close with the final test, which is a test based on the paper-based TOEFL test  (PBT). The final stage of PKM implementation is assessment, and evaluation. The results and discussion showed that before the training, the majority of participants were not familiar with TOEFL. Less than 5% of students are familiar, but after attending the training, most participants are able to understand the material and answer the questions well. TOEFL test results show that most participants are able to achieve scores that meet the required standards, some even exceed these standards. In conclusion, this training is considered effective in providing understanding and increasing participants' knowledge in taking the TOEFL test

Abstract

Technology company advertisement is becoming more and more creative and competitive as it has created certain public images of the companies through the use of slogans, which also have an impact on how the businesses are run. The aims of this research are to classify the types of meaning in technology company slogans and to find the purposes of the slogans. The seven types of meaning by Leech (1990) serves as the primary theory in this research. The method of this qualitative research is descriptive method; meanwhile, the method used to get the data needed on the purposes of slogans used by technology companies is documentary method as they are collected from their official websites and news websites. The results of the research shows that dealing with the types of meaning, it is found that there are only four types of meaning used by technology companies; conceptual meaning (25%), connotative meaning (12.5%), affective meaning (37.5%), and reflected meaning (25%); whereas, the purposes of the slogans used consist of increasing brand awareness (12.5%), promoting excellence (37.5%), conveying positive outlook (25%), and building social engagement (25%).

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PkM) merupakan salah satu tanggung jawab dosen untuk berkontribusi kepada masyarakat sekitar. PkM bersifat teknis sebagai upaya untuk melaksanakan salah satu dharma Perguruan Tinggi. Oleh karena itu, penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah kegiatan yang bersifat wajib yang harus dilaksanakan oleh seluruh dosen, termasuk dosen Bahasa Inggris khususnya di Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Widyatama Bandung. Program Studi Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Widyatama Bandung telah mendorong para guru dan siswa untuk mendukung desa dalam membangun dan menyediakan konten web sebagai aplikasi keterampilan menulis. Mitra program pada pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah warga Desa Karyawangi. Masalah utama mitra kami adalah kurangnya keterampilan menulis, serta kurangnya pemahaman dan penggunaan media digital sebagai sarana promosi dan penyebaran informasi. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memfasilitasi pembuatan website desa sebagai media pendukung peningkatan efektifitas penyebaran informasi dan promosi atraksi wisata Desa Karyawangi. Penelitian ini dirancang sebagai penelitian deskriptif-korelasional dengan metode survei. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dimana lokasi penelitian dilakukan di Desa Karyawangi Kecamatan Parongpong Kabupaten Bandung Barat. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner online (e-questionnaire), wawancara, dan data sekunder. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini telah berhasil mengenali karakter pengguna website, termasuk kualitas, dan efektivitas website untuk menyebarkan informasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 1) Pentingnya memiliki website desa, 2) kesadaran untuk mencari informasi dari website masih perlu lebih digalakkan. Dan 3) Website masih membutuhkan pengembangan, sehingga lebih banyak fitur yang ditambahkan untuk mengakomodasi kebutuhan pengguna.

Abstract

In accordance with articles 31 and 32 of the 1945 Constitution, as amended in Chapter XIII, it is stipulated that every citizen has the right to education because through education, every citizen can prepare themselves to play a role in society. This right extends to migrant workers, including all members of their families working in Taiwan, who are entitled to the same educational opportunities. Recognizing the awareness and responsibility of Indonesian students pursuing undergraduate (S1), master (S2), and doctoral (S3) studies in Taiwan to assist migrant workers in furthering their education, in 2015, they established an educational institution promoting equality in the form of a non-formal education programs, later known as the Community Learning Activity Center of the Indonesian Student Association (PKBM-PPI) Taiwan. The available programs include Package A (Elementary School), Package B (Junior High School), and Package C (Senior High School). The participants are migrant workers employed in Taiwan as caregivers for the elderly, aged between 20-50 years, predominantly female. Despite the PKBM activities commencing after their regular working hours, from 21:00 to 23:00 local time or 20:00 to 22:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), participants remain enthusiastic about attending the PKBM initiated and conducted by Indonesian students. This enthusiasm extends to participating in the Basic English Conversation Program, organized through collaboration between PKBM-PPI Taiwan and the Community Service Cluster of the English Language Program, Faculty of Humanities, Widyatama University, spanning one month (8 sessions).
