Abstract

This research aimed to find out the kind of online learning the students prefer and the reasons why the students prefer the online learning in learning English at SMA Negeri 16 Makassar. This research applied mixed methods research design. The data were collected from the questionnaire and interview. The subject of this study was the second-grade social science students. The questionnaire was conducted on 98 students and the interview was conducted on 12 students. The result of this research showed that the mean score of the students' preference in synchronous was (46,17) indicated "like" category and the mean score of the students' preference in asynchronous was (44,64) indicated "neutral" category. From the result, the researchers found that the mean score of synchronous was higher than asynchronous. The reasons why the students prefer synchronous are because there is the direct interaction between the students and teacher, being easy to understand, direct demonstration, and good emotional relationship between the students and teacher. Meanwhile, the students prefer asynchronous because there is saved task history, the materials can be repeated, providing clear materials, and facilitating assignment submission. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students prefer synchronous. Synchronous can be used to deliver the material and asynchronous can be used to provide the material or task, and students' assignment submission.

Abstract

This research is aimed at discovering whether or not the use of fairy tales improves the vocabulary achievement of students in their second year of MTsN 2 Kota Makassar. This study used a quasi-experimental approach with one group working as the control group, and the other as the experimental group. A 25-item vocabulary test was employed as the research instrument. The populations of this research were 40 students from the VIII.B and VIII.C classes in the academic year 2020-2021. This class was taken as the sample randomly through the cluster random sampling technique from 11 classes. To collect data, the pre-test and the post-test procedures were used. This study's findings reveal that the college students’ vocabulary mastery after receiving the treatment made positive progress. The average of the student's performance from the pre-test to the post-test can be demonstrated. The vocabulary achievement of the class which is taught by using fairy tales showed improvement (64.19 to 87.62). The computation and examination of the t value revealed that it was less than level significant (0.000<0.05). Thus, it concludes that the use of fairy tales improves the students’ vocabulary achievement of the second-year students MTsN 2 Kota Makassar.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to see If there is a substantial difference relationship between the habit of listening to English songs as well as their listening skills. This study used quantitative methods and correlational research was used as a research strategy. This study's population consisted of students from SMA Negeri 2 class X Pangkep in the 2021/2022 school year. The samples were collected with the help of a cluster random sampling technique consisting of 37 students. The instrument of this research is a Questionnaire of 20 numbers and a Listening test of 30 numbers. From the analysis of data and computations, it was found that there was no relationship between students who like to listen to music and their listening ability. The result of rxy is -128, and after consultation with rtable, rxy (-128) < rtable (0.334). This means that there is no correlation. The significant worth of this research was 0.000 where significant degree used was -0.128. The hypothesis which states that There isn't any connection between habit in listening and listening abilities is (Ho) accepted so that the alternative hypothesis is rejected. Finally, there are a strong unfavorable relationship between listening habits and listening ability.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to discover whether the use of the ESA Method in teaching speaking has effects or not. The pre-experimental design was the method used by the researchers with one group pre-test and post-test. The population was the tenth-grade students of SMAN 3 Makassar in the 2021/2022 academic year. The sample was taken by using a purposive sample technique that consisted of 30 students. The instrument of this research was a speaking test administered as a pre-test and post-test. The result of this research proved that there was a significant difference between students’ scores before treatment and students’ scores after treatment. The students' speaking ability after the implementation of ESA is increased or getting better than before the implementation of the ESA Method. It can be seen from the mean score, the mean score of students’ pre-tests was 61.64,0020and it was lower than the mean score of post-tests (74.73). The significant value of this research (0.000) was smaller than the significant level (0.05). It can be concluded that the use of the ESA method affects students’ speaking ability in terms of accuracy and fluency at the tenth-grade students of SMAN 3 Makassar.

Abstract

Professional Development has played an essential role in ELT in Indonesia, where English is considered a foreign language. Regarding this, the researcher is aimed to find out the perceptions of EFL lecturers about the types of Professional Development activities most influence the lecturers' classroom activities, and the impact of Professional Development on lecturers' teaching practices. This research used a descriptive qualitative method involving 20 EFL lecturers in the English Education Department of Tarbiyah and Teaching Training Faculty, UIN Alauddin Makassar. The data revealed that the Professional Development activities have high-positive impact towards their teaching practices. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that EFL lecturers have a good perspective on Professional Development activities and help them improve the level of the criteria of a competent teacher.

Abstract

The research was aimed at investigating: 1) To find out the students’ achievement in their descriptive text writing using Think-Talk-Write and Clustering Technique. 2) To find out the students’ interest in the implementation of the Think-Talk-Write and Clustering Technique in writing descriptive text. This study was a quasi-experimental research with two groups. The population of this research was the 4th and 6th semester of the English Department in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Iqra Buru University. Directed took cluster random as the sample. As a result, the 22 students were selected as the experimental group and the 20 students as the control group. The data were obtained from the pretest and posttest. Then, the data were analyzed by using an independent sample t-test. The mean achievement scores of the experimental group were 64.68 bigger than the mean achievement scores of the control group was 53.05. In the pretest, the t-test for Equality of Means in the Sig. (2-tailed) was bigger than Sig. (2-tailed) in the posttest. Because The result of this research revealed that the mean achievement scores of the students in the experimental group are greater than the mean achievement scores of the students in the control group. So, there was a significant difference in correlation between the mean achievement scores of students taught using Think-Talk-Write and using the clustering technique. This suggests that the Think-Talk-Write technique facilitates the students to improve their writing achievement.
