Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the correlation between depth and breadth of vocabulary and reading comprehension. This research was conducted by using quantitative method with correlational design. Thirty of fifth semester students of English Education Department at Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar were chosen as the sample of this research. The data was gathered used Word Associates Test, Vocabulary Level Test and reading Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). To verify the hypotheses, the data were analyzed by using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation formula. The finding of this research indicated that there was a moderate correlation between depth of vocabulary and reading comprehension with correlation coefficient value was 0.440 > 0.361, and there was also a moderate correlation between breadth of vocabulary and reading comprehension with correlation coefficient value is 0.421> 0.361. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that both of the index value of correlation coefficient (rxy) of 0.440 for depth of vocabulary and 0.421 for breadth of vocabulary were higher than the index value of correlation coefficient of the Product Moment table (rt) of 0.361 which meant that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In conclusion, there was a moderate correlation between the depth and breadth of vocabulary and reading comprehension.

In addition, using YouTube videos are remarkable for enhancing the students’ listening achievements in the classroom. The research questions are: 1) how are the students’ listening achievements of the second grade students at MA Guppi Samata before learning listening using YouTube videos? 2) How are the students’ listening achievements of the second grade students at MA Guppi Samata after learning listening using YouTube videos? 3) Is there any significant difference of influence before and after using YouTube videos of the second grade at MA Guppi Samata? The design of the research was quantitative research which is pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was 50 students and the sample was chosen 25 students from XI B as the purposively. Tests were used as the instrument. All the collected data were analysed using the SPSS application showing all the students at MA Guppi Samata Gowa gained a 46.92 mean score, which convened as low classification in pre-test their first listening test. After some treatments, the mean score was increased 68.44 which classified as a reasonable classification. The degree of freedom (df) 24 pointed the students' listening achievement with t-test value (12.036) which turned out higher than the t-table value (2.064). This result analysis presented that this research's impact on the students effectively increased their scores and comprehension.

The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R&D). The development model used was ADDIE model. It consists of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The procedures included analyzing materials needed by distributing questionnaire to the students and analyzing the basic competences used, designing a blueprint of materials, and developing the English materials through ADDIE model. In this research, the expert was involved in order to validate the product. There were three systematic aspects that they validated of the product: the aspect of the content/material, the aspect of learning and the aspect of graphics feasibility. Therefore, the result indicated that based on experts judgment as well as product development result, the developed basic competences 3.8 and 4.8 was applicable to be taught at the eighth grade students of Junior High School as topics in English for them.
