Abstract

Using simple and interesting strategies in teaching Prose is a must for a lecturer. There are many new methods or strategies to be applied in our classroom when we teach our students the characterization theories, one of them is STEAL Strategy. It is basically the characterization theories that have been summed up into a mnemonic device in form of an acronym (Speech, Thought, Effect on Others, Action, Looks) to help our students to easily memorize something. This writing is trying to prove the effectiveness of the strategy when it is applied to a novel entitled BFG written by Roald Dahl. The results show that this strategy helped the writer in making inferences, finding specific textual evidence to support the assertion about the chosen character, and also developing arguments. Therefore, the writer would like to suggest the English Study Program lecturers who teach Prose or Extensive Reading to apply this method in his or her classroom.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the types of word formation in the names of the giants; the fictional characters in children's book entitled The BFG written by Roald Dahl. This research was designed as descriptive qualitative research. To investigate the language phenomenon, the writer employed Yule's theoretical framework regarding the word-formation process. There are 10 types of word-formation processes proposed by Yule (2010), such as coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, conversion, acronym, derivation, back-formation, clipping, and multiple processes. But apparently, in creating names for the giants characters in the story, Dahl only used 3 types of word formation, they are an acronym, compounding, and multiple processes.

Abstract

Students' English speaking ability in schools in general is still low. There are various affecting factors. Some most obvious factors include limited English exposure to students in class (classroom language) and students’ motivation to learn English. English language exposure which is very important in foreign language learning is limited. Then, it is necessary to find a strategy which is potential to provide more English language exposure and motivation for students. This study aimed to examine: (1) the difference in speaking ability between students taught with the learning strategy on the bases of classroom language and those taught with conventional learning strategy; (2) the difference in speaking ability between students having high motivation and those having low motivation; (3) interaction effect of the learning strategy on the basis of classroom language and motivation to students' speaking ability. This study used a quasi-experimental research design. In particular, it employed factorial 2x2 version non-equivalent control group. The subjects were the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang, Indonesia. Two classes were randomly chosen, one as experimental group and the other as control group. Contextual learning strategy on the basis of classroom language was applied in experimental class whereas conventional learning strategy was used in control class. Data taken from both classes were then descriptively and statistically analyzed (ANOVA) using SPSS version 16.0 for windows. Results showed that (1) there was a significant difference in speaking ability between students in experimental group and those in control group. Contextual learning strategy on the basis of classroom language was more effective; (2) there was a significant difference in speaking ability between students in high motivation group and those in low motivation group. High motivation students were more successful; (3) there was no interaction effect of learning strategy based on classroom language and motivation to students' ability of speaking. Based on these results, teachers of English in general and those teaching at SMAN 5 Kupang in particular are recommended to use classroom language that provides more language exposure and motivation for students.

Realizing the importance of English in this modern era, the community service team has developed a learning program in a practical and interesting way that in learning English. Working with religious institutions was one of the methods to support government programs. The program was held in Letbaun Village, Semau District in Kupang Regency. The underlying thing was the lack of vocabulary and grammar in English. The team conducted practical, creative, and fun English learning materials and videos to attract interest in learning English. The book was equipped with pictures and vocabulary relating to general English materials such as greetings, self-introduction, parts of the body, and names of days and months, also provided some Bible-themed materials (God’s creation, the ten plagues in Egypt, the Lord's Prayer in English, the name of the books in English). The book was provided with the aims, directions for Sunday School Teachers, and exercises. There were still several things that have not been achieved such as evaluation of learning outcomes. To complete this activity, the team planned an evaluation to be carried out in the coming semesters regarding the use of products. Keywords : bible-themed, community service, grammar, Sunday school, vocabulary
