Abstract

Abstrak. The phenomenon of interference occurs in sociolinguistics when one language or dialect impacts another. This study was conducted with the objective to shed light on the specific types of phonological interference experienced by students in a multilingual class at MAN Kota Palangka Raya. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, this investigation focused on the phonological aspects influenced by students' native languages—Banjarese and Dayakese. The research revealed that students exhibit tendencies of Sound Addition, Sound Omission, and Sound Replacement across both language groups as they navigate between their mother tongues and English. The findings stress the complexities involved in English language teaching in environments where students' linguistic backgrounds are diverse. Understanding the nature of phonological interference can equip educators with the necessary tools to develop pedagogical strategies that are attuned to the linguistic challenges faced by multilingual students. This, in turn, can aid in fostering a more effective and inclusive approach to language education that helps diminish language acquisition barriers attributed to the influence of the learners' first languages. Keywords: Interference, Multilingual, Sound Addition, Sound Omission, Sound Replacement.

Abstract

In the realm of educational systems, language testing plays a vital role in assessing a learner's language abilities. Ensuring the reliability and validity of such tests is crucial to provide an accurate gauge of proficiency and depth of learners' knowledge. However, modifications are necessary for testing methods to cope with the ever-evolving landscape of teaching methodologies while maintaining their effectiveness. This study employs a comparative analysis approach between an original and a reconstructed English language test, following the guidelines of the 'Kurikulum Merdeka' for 11th-grade students. Utilising Bloom's Taxonomy as a framework, both the original and reconstructed tests are evaluated with respect to cognitive complexity and coverage of various cognitive skills. The implemented modifications in the test demonstrated a significant enhancement in the overall effectiveness and alignment with broader cognitive skills. Two key modifications, expanding the multiple-choice answers from four to five and realigning questions to span various cognitive levels as per Bloom's Taxonomy, were found to be effective in increasing the complexity and scope of the test. This, in turn, led to a more comprehensive engagement of students in the test. The study concludes that the reconstructed test format, when compared to the original, offers a more effective overall assessment structure. Its more challenging nature stimulates critical thinking, deep understanding, and creativity among learners, thereby promoting improved language assessment and a better understanding of teaching-learning processes. It underscores the necessity of periodic improvements and modifications in test designs, ultimately contributing towards more precise and effective language testing.

Abstract

Abstract

Interference is defined as the divergence from the norm of language usage that occurs as a result of multilingualism with regard to one or more other languages. Interference occurs when students are studying both the intended language and their first language in the same time. The incapacity of a person who is bilingual to differentiate between the components of the two languages that they are fluent in will lead to a successful error that is known as morphological interference. This occurrence also happens in MAN Kota Palangka Raya. This research was conducted to discover the various sorts of morphological interference created by the students at the eleventh grade of MAN Kota Palangka Raya in their English writing. The qualitative technique was used to analyse the data gathered for this research. The subjects were the students from XI MIPA 1 that consists of 34 students. In order to obtain the information, the researcher split the class into 7 groups, and each of those groups was given the assignment of writing an explanation text in English. There were 6 types of morphological interference: indefinite article, possessive, plural marker, simple past, past participle, and comparative adjective/adverb. The result showed that there were forty number of features that point to morphological interference. The dominant types that the students mostly errors in writing their Explanation Text in English was Past Participle. Followed by Plural Marker. Meanwhile Possessive has a small amount of errors, and students did not do many mistakes in writing the Indefinite Article.

Abstract

Journalistic text plays an important role in information transfer such as the latest events, issues, or problems from parts of the world. With the rapid development of digital platforms, journalistic can be accessed easily through the internet, which arouses the need for translation as a means to bridge understanding between languages. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate students’ strategies and errors in journalistic text translation. By referring to translation strategies adapted from Newmark (1988), Hoed (2006), Baker (2011), the target text was analyzed based on several strategies including transference, calque, naturalization, accepted translation, paraphrase, modulation, transposition, cultural equivalence, addition, omission, and explication. Based on the translation quality assessment model adapted from Nababan et al. (2012), the translations made by the students have decent quality for accuracy and a medium level of competence in producing acceptable translations. However, the translation products have a high degree of readability which means they are easy to understand. Based on the classification proposed by Sukur et al. (2020), the finding shows that the errors made by the students in translating journalistic texts include a lack of cultural background knowledge, situation concordance, use of unsuitable words to the context, and failure to understand speech act. With some suggestions to overcome those challenges, this study is expected to provide pedagogical insight for translation courses regarding the practice of journalistic translation.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of an English analytical exposition text written by Indonesian students on "The Dangers of Smoking." By evaluating the text using three key criteria – Sociolinguistics, Syntax, and Vocabulary – the researchers aim to explore the students' ability to utilize language in social contexts, their understanding of sentence structure, and their proficiency in using suitable words to convey their arguments effectively. Through a qualitative approach, the researchers conducted a meticulous assessment of the text, revealing the students' adeptness in incorporating societal implications, utilizing logical sequencing, and employing persuasive language. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into students' written capabilities and provide guidance for future pedagogical interventions in fostering linguistic development among learners.
