Abstract

Abstract: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a restorative material used in child dental care with anti-cariogenic properties and fluoride release. However, this GIC has some disadvantages, such as high solubility due to acid particles that can cause surface roughness. Children at a young age typically drink milk, such as Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk or soy milk which may affect the restorative material. This study aimed to evaluate the surface roughness of GIC immersed in UHT milk, soy milk, and artificial saliva. This was an experimental laboratory study. Samples were GICs (GC Fuji VII, Japan) in a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. A total of 18 samples were divided into three groups, one group (n=6) was immersed in UHT milk, and the other two groups were immersed in soy milk and artificial saliva. The samples were tested using a surface roughness tester (Surtronic S-128) that was reviewed before and after immersion. The results showed that the surface roughness value of GIC was increased after being immersed in UHT milk (0.12±0.02), soy milk (0.12±0.06), and artificial saliva (0.06±0.03). The Kruskal Wallis test showed no significant difference in surface roughness of GICs immersed in the three groups. In conclusion, UHT milk and soy milk did not significantly affect the surface roughness of GICs.Keywords: glass ionomer cement; surface roughness; UHT milk; soy milk Abstrak: Semen ionomer kaca (SIK) merupakan bahan restorasi pada perawatan gigi anak yang memiliki sifat antikariogenik dan dapat melepaskan fluoride.

Abstract

Abstract: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a public health problem defined as the presence of one or more teeth with carious lesions in children aged 6 years or younger. ECC can affect a child's well-being, growth and quality of life. Factors such as poor oral hygiene, bacterial invasion, poor dietary habits, and the presence of enamel defects can contribute to lesion formation. The risk of ECC may also be due to breastfeeding or formula feeding overnight. The aim of this study to determine the role of breastfeeding and formula feeding through bottles on Early Childhood Caries (ECC). This Scoping Review was conducted according to Preferres Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and two database (PubMed and Google Scholar). The results showed that the initial search yielded 183 documents. After eliminating duplicate studies and screening full-text articles for eligibility (n = 35), we identified 7 studies that met the criteria for inclusion. The duration, frequency and night-time feeding of breast milk and bottle milk supported by other environmental factors may increase the risk of Early Childhood Caries (ECC).

Abstract

Background: The Ministry of Health’s Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) in 2018 showed that the largest proportion of dental and oral problem is among the age group of 5-9 years (67.3%) where only 14.6% have received treatment by dental professionals. This is due to a lack of knowledge about maintaining oral health in children, and one of the health efforts to reduce dental and oral problems is to provide Dental Health Education (DHE). Generally, DHE activities are carried out face to face and practiced together in the field. The implementation during the Covid-19 pandemic requires a strategy that considers health and security aspects to prevent the transmission of the virus. Objectives: This research aims to determine the difference in children's knowledge level about dental and oral health before and after DHE with educational video media. Methods: This is an experimental analytic research with a cross-sectional study design. It was conducted at the Alamy Integrated Islamic Elementary School in Subang, where third-grade students completed the pre-test before watching the educational video, and post-test after watching video. Results: The average value of children's dental and oral health knowledge before and after being treated was 40.0 and 42.1, respectively. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon test showed a significant effect on the provision of DHE to children's knowledge about oral health. Conclusion: The provision of DHE significantly affects children's knowledge conveyed through educational videos.

Abstract

Water is crucial for human survival, serving both consumption needs and daily activities. However, water contamination often occurs when it is not managed and stored properly. Contaminated drinking water can pose health risks, causing various digestive diseases and even death, especially in children. Therefore, the management and storage of water require special attention. Indonesian communities, especially those in the RW 006, Tanjung Duren Selatan, are still limited in gathering clean water without proper water management for it to be made suitable for consumption. In response to this concern, a program was implemented to enhance awareness and empower the residents of RW 006, Tanjung Duren Selatan, focusing on improving environmental sanitation and the effective management of safe drinking water. The activities took place at the secretariat office of RW 006, Tanjung Duren Selatan, on Friday, November 10, 2023, from 08:30 to 10:15 AM. A total of 25 participants filled out attendance and completed pre-test questionnaires. Participants were then provided with education and training by the team on environmental sanitation, Community-Based Total Sanitation (STMB), proper management of household waste, and the handling of water intended for consumption. The post-test results showed an improvement in participants' knowledge and understanding regarding the enhancement of environmental sanitation and the management of water ready for consumption in households. It is hoped that participants will serve as links in communication and educators within the local community, ultimately contributing to improved sanitation and an enhanced quality of life.
