Abstract

This research aims at investigating and finding out whether storigami is effective in teaching English vocabulary for vocational higher students. Based on the researchers’ observation, most of the students have lack of vocabulary though in mastering English vocabulary is an essential thing that should be known and mastered, especially for vocational higher students who will directly face the working situation. This problem happened because, in their perspective, understanding vocabulary only can be reached through translation and memorization. The subject of this research was taken two classes purposively named control class and experimental class. The samples were taken by determining specific characteristics of students during the learning process. The experiment class applied Storigami as the treatment, while the control class applied the Grammar Translation Method (GTM). Before applying the treatment, a pre-test was conducted for both classes with the same questions. Then, after the treatment, a post-test was conducted for both classes. After collecting and analyzing the data, the researchers found that teaching vocabulary by Storigami is more effective than GTM. The finding showed that T0 :2.639 > T.Tabel: 2.01 means the null hypothesis is rejected and the experiment hypothesis is accepted, or there is any significance between X and Y variables. Furthermore, the mean score of the post-test in the experiment class is higher than the mean score in the control class. It happened because teaching vocabulary by using Storigami is more fascinating for students, and origami can be applied to building students’ English vocabulary and students’ creative thinking.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the visual elements provided in the e-learning website of Universitas Terbuka. The elements include visual presentation, usability, accessability, and content. The method employed in this study was Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) involving the visuals of the website as data source which is available at https://elearning.ut.ac.id/. The instrument used was visual theories which support the propositions of visual presentation, usability, accessability, and content to validate the data found. In analyzing the data, interactive analysis was used involving data condensation, data display, and data verification. The findings showed that: in visual presentation, the website portrays good presentation except for its unbalance split; in usability, the website has good extent of usability, this website has provided good navigation system and easy to understand, except for the video speed; in accessibility, all elements of accessibility are achieved well; and in concern of materials, the materials are easy to access and relevant with the learners’ need.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa komunikasi global. Sadar akan pentingnya penggunaan bahasa Inggris, pemerintah telah menetapkan bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu mata pelajaran di dalam kurikulum sekolah. Bahasa Inggris dapat dipelajari baik dalam pendidikan formal maupun informal. Namun, pendidikan informal/ kursus bahasa Inggris tidaklah murah untuk masyarakat kurang mampu. Kebanyakan dari mereka beranggapan bahwa bahasa Inggris bukanlah prioritas. Masalah tersebut dapat menurunkan motivasi dan daya tarik bagi putra-putri mereka dalam berbahasa Inggris sehingga mereka akan kesulitan dalam berkomunikasi bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan ini diberikan kepada anak-anak dari masyarakat kurang mampu dan dilakanakan di RPTRA Cipedak Gemilang, Jakarta Selatan. Ruang Publik Terpadu Ramah Anak berada dibawah tanggung jawab Komando Rayon Militer. Materi pelatihan yaitu tentang percakapan sehari-hari dalam Bahasa Inggris. Setelah pelaksanaan pelatihan, peserta pelatihan terlihat lebih mampu dan percaya diri dalam berkomunikasi Bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris dan motivasi sebagai pembelajar Bahasa Inggris.
