Abstract

Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk melatih kemampuan Bahasa Inggris para santri dan ulama di Kota Batam guna meningkatkan skor tes kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka. Sertifikat kemampuan bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu syarat yang paling umum untuk studi lanjut, khususnya jika ingin mendaftar pada program beasiswa. Sama seperti pendaftar lainnya, beberapa ulama dan santri kesulitan mencapai skor tes minimal yang dicantumkan dalam syarat pendaftaran beasiswa. Oleh karena itu dibutuhkan pelatihan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris para santri dan ulama. Kegiatan pengabdian ini diselenggarakan ini sebanyak 7 kali pertemuan dengan metode hybrid, yaitu daring dan luring dengan memanfaatkan platform daring yaitu Google Form. Kuesioner diedarkan secara daring kepada para peserta untuk mengukur tingkat keberhasilan kegiatan. Hasil dari pelatihan ini menunjukkan tanggapan positif terhadap kegiatan pelatihan ini. Kesan positif ini merupakan indikasi peserta pelatihan merasa lebih siap berhadapan dengan format tes dan mempunyai gambaran lebih jelas mengenai berbagai kemampuan yang diujikan dalam evaluasi kemampuan berbahasa Inggris ini.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the outcome of role play as an approach in developing the communicative competence of student in Politeknik Negeri Batam. Moreover, the focus of this study was on how the student’s willingness, English competence and language improvement. The information was gathered through online survey. Guide questions were prepared and validated; The respondents are student who take Business to Business Sales course. PBL one of learning strategy where teaching is driven by a problem or project. The problem could be a challenge or a description of a difficulty, analyze the case, or find the solution for a certain topic. The result of this research shows that the students have an enthusiasm in learning English by using this strategy, the student’s English competence also improved and students also have willingness and ability to improvise during their role play performance.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is one of the important keys that bridge the subject comprehension. Understanding new concepts, ideas, and principles requires knowledge and competence in using words in various settings. The success of English learning in ESP will then contribute to the success of understanding other subjects in the field. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the problems, needs, and feasible strategies in improving vocabulary mastery in vocational higher education settings. The total of 303 freshmen students participated in this study, along with 7 English lecturers who were teaching in their classes. A vocabulary test, open-ended questionnaire, and focus group discussion (FGDs) were used as instruments. The results present the current state of students’ vocabulary level. Moreover, a number of strategies were also recommended by the lecturer in terms of students’ English vocabulary learning dan development. Future research directions are also presented
