Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen bacteria that forms biofilm and induces acute inflammation associated with dentoalveolar abscess, which needs antibiotics such as amoxicillin for the treatment. Due to antibiotic resistance and various side effects, natural ingredients are needed as an alternative treatment. Arumanis mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) contains mangiferin, flavonoid, and tannin which are expected to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and its biofilm formation. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of Mangifera indica L. leaves against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. Methods: This study was in vitro laboratory experiment with post test only control group design. Antibacterial test was carried out by plate count method and antibiofilm test was carried out by microtiter plate biofilm assay method. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 was cultured in BHI broth in 37oC for 24h with anaerobic condition. The present study used ethanol extract of Mangifera indica L. leaves in 6 different concentrations: 3,125%, 6,25%, 12,5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. Amoxicillin was used as positive control and DMSO 10% used as negative control. Data was analyzed with Shapiro-wilk test, One-way ANOVA test, and post hoc Tukey HSD test with p<0,05 as the level of significance. Results: The most effective concentration to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus was 100% extract compared to negative control (p<0,05). The most effective concentration against Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation was 100% extract in 3hr incubation compared to negative control (p<0,05). Conclusion: Ethanol extract of Mangifera indica L. leaves has been shown in vitro to have antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

Bad breath, or commonly known as halitosis, is a health problem that is often overlooked. It can harm a person's daily life, including social isolation, anxiety, and discomfort. Halitosis can be divided into two types: genuine halitosis (related to oral issues) and delusional halitosis (related to false perceptions). Most cases of halitosis are caused by oral hygiene problems such as reduced saliva, dry mouth, gingivitis, periodontitis, and the use of dentures. Specific bacteria in the mouth can produce foul-smelling compounds known as volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), such as methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide. Additionally, halitosis can also result from systemic issues or bad habits. It is important to provide education to the community on how to address halitosis and maintain oral hygiene. Steps like regular tooth brushing, tongue cleaning, using dental floss, and avoiding strongly aromatic foods can help reduce the risk of halitosis. In the community of RT015/RW008, Kelurahan Jatipulo, West Jakarta, this education is particularly crucial because the level of knowledge about oral health is low. Through education and training, it is hoped that the community can recognize the causes of halitosis and address the issue before seeking medical help. This will improve the quality of life for the community, boost their self-confidence, and help prevent more serious oral health.

Abstract

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) rind contains secondary metabolite compounds which exhibit antimicrobial effects against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans can cause tissue damage and bone resorption, leading to aggressive periodontitis. Chlorhexidine as golden standard antimicrobial mouthwash can cause tooth staining. There is a need for herbal remedies with fewer side effects as an alternative treatment for periodontitis. This study aims to determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacy of C. lanatus rind ethanol extract against A. actinomycetemcomitans. This is an experimental laboratory in vitro with a post-test-only control group design. The antibacterial test was conducted using the plate count method and the antibiofilm test using the microtiter plate biofilm assay method. The samples used were ethanol extract of C. lanatus rind 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%, chlorhexidine 0.2% as positive control, distilled water, and BHI-B as negative control. As a result, extract concentrations from 12.5% to 100% exhibited antibacterial effects on A. actinomycetemcomitans equivalent to chlorhexidine. During the 3-hour incubation period, extract at 25% and 100% concentrations on all incubation times showed a better antibiofilm effect than chlorhexidine. It can be concluded that ethanol extract of C. lanatus rind had the potential as an alternative antibiofilm agent against A. actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

The first five years of childhood are a period or stage of age that determines human quality in adulthood. The critical period of children up to the age of the first two years is a period called the window of opportunity that requires nutritional support, special stimulus, and intervention. The Problem of Lack of Protein Energy (KEP) is one of the main nutritional problems that occur in toddlers and is very influential on the child's growth process. To find out if toddlers are stunted, the World Health Organization (WHO) used the growth standard as a reference by measuring the value of Z (Z score). There are 3 indicators, namely weight for length (WLZ), length for age (LAZ), and weight for age (WAZ). If the child is stunted, then the Z Standard Deviation (SD) score in the LAZ score is less than -2. To measure motoric capability, MSEL: AGS (Mullen Scales of Early Learning: AGD Edition) can be used. This method is used to measure cognition in children by measuring 5 cognitive scales i.e. Gross motor (GM), fine motor, visual capture, receptive language, and expressive language. This stunting condition can affect the cognitive development and brain growth of the child. Cognitive decline can lead to a lack of productivity and can decrease the learning achievement of children, even to adolescence
