Abstract

According to Riskesdas 2018 the prevalence of dental and oral diseases in Indonesia is still high (57.6%) and the most cases are caries and periodontal disease. Periodontal tissue infection is a local oral infection that can be a focal oral infection, and has a risk of affecting systemic conditions. Microorganisms, toxins and inflammatory reactions in infected periodontal tissues can spread systemically to other parts of the body, thatcan cause infections in the area or worsen existing conditions. Systemic conditions that can be affected by periodontal tissue infections including coronary heart disease / arterosclerosis, stroke, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, chronic pulmonary obstruction, acute respiratory infections. The purpose of this literature review is to refresh about oral focal infection, as well as more convincing that periodontal infection was a risk factor for systemic conditions, in terms of inflammatory reactions.Influencing inflammatory reactions are inflammatory mediators, including interleukin (IL-1α, IL-β, IL-6, IL-8), tumor necotic factors (TNFα) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Biological mechanisms support the role of periodontal infection as a potential risk factor for a number of systemic conditions.Future multidisciplinary research should better illustrate the role of periodontal infections in systemic health, so that the influence between periodontal infections and systemic conditions such as premature LBW, diabetes, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases will be increasingly proven

Abstract

Background: Plaque is the main cause of caries and periodontal disease. Caries and periodontal disease can be prevented by inhibiting dental plaque formation. To inhibit the formation of plaque, teeth must be brushed with toothpaste. According to previous studies, propolis contains apigenin and tt-farnesol classified as flavonoid that can inhibit the formation of dental plaque by inhibiting glucosyltransferase enzym and membrane integrity of Streptococcus mutans. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of toothpaste containing propolis on the formation of dental plaque. Methods: Post test with only control group design was used. The subjects of this study were 30 boarding school students of Hidayatullah, Yayasan Al-Burhan, Gedawang, Semarang, divided into two groups, randomized control group and treatment group. Control group was not treated with toothpaste contanining propolis. Meanwhile, treatment group was treated with toothpaste containing propolis. Plaque then was measured by using plaque index of Sillness and Loe method after using toothpaste containing propolis for four hours. Afterwards, the data was analyzed by a computer program, Mann-Whitney test, with its significance p < 0.05. Results: The result of Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference, 0.002 (p < 0.05), between the control group and the treatment group. The median of the control group was about 3.41, while that of the treatment group was about 0.58. Conclusion: The use of toothpaste contaning propolis can prevent dental plaque formation. Abstract

Background: Young slow learners are children with special needs who require special attention to satisfy their personal hygiene needs, especially those of dental hygiene since they are particularly susceptible to tooth decay. Changing the knowledge and attitudes of those slow learners can be achieved by a proper method. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effects of teaching effective methods of brushing teeth by means of an audio video approach on the knowledge and attitude of young slow learners in Cirebon regency. Methods: This study was quasi-experimental in nature using pre test-post test methods within a two-group design. The sampling technique employed was purposive in nature. The number of young slow learners as respondents in this research totalled 31 individuals. Those children were, subsequently, divided into two groups; Group I containing 16 children, instructed in tooth brushing techniques by means of an audio video method and Group II composed of 15 children who were taught tooth brushing techniques manually. The variables measured consisted of subjects’ knowledge of and attitude towards how to brush teeth most effectively identified by means of a questionnaire, in order that the interval data could be collected. Results: The results of an independent T-test showed there to be significant differences in the mean scores of the knowledge variable and the attitude variable (p = 0.003 and p = 0.000 respectively) between Groups I and II, at that stage of the investigation. Conclusion: It can be concluded that instructional audio-videos on how to brush teeth most effectively can improve both the knowledge and attitude of children with slow learning problems.

Abstract

Background: The orthodontic bracket transmit significant force from orthodontic wire to the teeth. Metal ions from the bracket may undergo biodegradation due to corrosion and create micro pit on the surface which increase friction resistance. Friction resistance between the archwire and the bracket may effect tooth movement and cause loss of anchorage. This study determine the correlation between surface roughness and friction resistance in orthodontic Roth brackets.Method: Seventeen brackets were prepared from previous study and were analyzed using SEM-EDX (Phenom Pro X) to measure surface roughness. Friction resistance were measured using universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation.Result: Significant correlation were found between surface roughness and friction resistance on orthodontic brackets (p<0.05). The relationship is strongly correlated and directly proportional, with a positive coefficient value of 0.587. Conclusion: The conclusion of the research showed that there was a significant correlation between surface roughness and friction resistance of orthodontic brackets.
