Abstract

Why do elementary school students in Sidoarjo tend to have changeable behavior in terms of reading and borrowing books in the school library? This paper describes the mimetic mechanism of Rene Girard in activities in the library, namely borrowing books and reading with the teacher. Data was collected by reading the 2019-2020 Quarterly Report, especially data on borrowing books from 10 elementary schools for 6 months, selecting 2 photos of reading aloud activities, and interviewing 5 teacher informants. Specifically, in interviews, the 5 informants were included in a joint evaluation meeting with 120 participants first, then were interviewed in depth separately. The three types of data were analyzed based on 4 themes derived from the theory of Mimetic Desire with a mixed approach (mixed method research). Data validation was analyzed by triangulation of data sources and triangulation of methods. The findings in this study provide a thematic description based on Rene Girard's Mimetic Desire theory that elementary school students in Sidoarjo tend to have behavior that changes according to the mimetic mechanism in reading and borrowing books in the library.

Abstract

Rising sea level as one of the effects of climate change may probably destroy the coastal area. This nature phenomenon is explained in a pictorial children's storybook entitled Sea Change. The story tells about rising sea level in Fiji, and it is suitable to the reality occurring in Fiji. Rising sea level reaches the land by the sea, hence the people living there must be relocated. Sea Changes is analyzed using ecocritical approach and semiotic theory. This study aims to reveal the meaning of visual appearance which goes to the values containing in the story. The analysis reveals four ecocritical elements by Scott Slovic, these are where the humans are, where the humans live, how the humans treat the environment, and how humans treat other humans. The four questions are answered using semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, which emphasizes the process of semiosis with the meaning of the relationship between signs or representamen in the pictorial book and the values for children. The results of the study are that Sea Change gives some value for children, these are about where humans properly live, and how humans properly treat the environment and other humans.

Abstract

The focus of the study is to describe the characteristics of the superiority complex and explain the causes of the superiority complex reflected by Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman using the superiority complex theory proposed by Adler. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the problems. It employs qualitative research to categorize the evidence in a frequency table. The study shows that Willy exhibits all of the characteristics of aggressiveness expected of the self-accusative type. The most dominant traits Willy suffers from are exaggerated claims about himself and hostility toward the depreciation type. He also undergoes all of the causes of the superiority complex, such as Pampered Lifestyle and Feeling Neglected. So, from the social perspective, The death of Willy Loman reflects the heavy burden of his life in achieving his dream to be a successful parent who educates his sons. His obsession causes him to commit suicide, and he develops a superiority complex to sacrifice for his family.
