Abstract

Enriching knowledge, especially in English can happen in other fields such as song, movie, poetry, novel, and many more. Currently, many people prefer to increase their vocabulary by using a song that consists of a combination of music and lyrics to definite a sensitivity of heart, idea, and the way of thinking. Through the lyric plus song music, the listener can express their idea, feeling, and emotion and learn. In this research, the researcher focuses to examine the use of deixis through the song lyrics of Perfect by Ed Sheeran. The researcher analyzed it is to figure out the kinds of deixis that occur in the song of Ed Sheeran. By using qualitative research, the researchers found some fascinating results. The researcher discovered that there were two types of deixis, such as the personal deixis, and the temporal deixis. In the personal deixis, the song consisted of first person (I, me, my, we, mine, our), second person (your, your), and third person (it, she, her). The last finding was temporal deixis that concentrated on defining the time (this time, in the dark, tonight, that someday, now). Additionally, this research was conducted to help further researchers to examine deixis which focused to display or underline which is used to represent those foundations in the expression which for directly to the situation.

Abstract

This study focuses on the learning strategies used by lecture in teaching descriptive writing in overcoming Learning at Sumbawa Islamic High School. The purpose of this study were; 1) to find out the challenges faced by EFL learners with low literacy in improving their descriptive writing skills, and 2) the perceptions of EFL learners with low literacy regarding the use of translanguaging strategies in improving their descriptive writing skills.  This research is qualitative research. Researchers used two instruments to obtain the required data, namely: observation and interviews. Based on the data obtained from the second instrument used, the following findings were obtained. First, The challenges faced by EFL learners with low literacy has five category; first, limitation of vocabulary, second complex grammar and sentence structures, third language used, fourth, learning resources, and fifth, strategy used. Language used by the teacher has the huge challenge in their learning process of descriptive writing of students of Sumbawa Islamic High School. Second, The perceptions of EFL learners with low literacy has three category; first, learning process, second, learning motivation, and third, maintaining native language. The perception of the learners regarding used translanguaging has positive contribution in teaching and learning process of descriptive writing of students of Sumbawa Islamic High School.

Abstract

Kegiatan PKM Penyiapan Generasi Global melalui Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SDN Empan diadakan sebagai upaya untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris siswa di SDN Empan yang terletak di Desa Labuhan Badas, Kecamatan Labuhan Badas, Kabupaten Sumbawa. SDN ini terletak 13 KM dari pusat kota Kabupaten Sumbawa. Kegiatan PKM ini merupakan kelanjutan dari program pendapingan belajar bahasa Inggris sebelumnya yang sudah dilaksanakan pada periode Maret s.d Mei 2023. Permasalahan yang dihadapi mitra adalah: 1) Area sekolah sering dikunjungi tamu asing, dan 2) Diperlukan kesenambungan pembelajaran bagi siswa-siswa yang sudah mengikuiti pendampingan sebelumnya. Oleh karena itu, solusi yang diberikan untuk mengatasi permasalahan di atas adalah; 1) Menyiapkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang memadai untuk bisa berinteraksi maksimal dengan para pengunjung asing tersebut, dan 2) Mendampingi dan melatih kecakapan berbahasa dan mempraktekannya, baik dalam kelas maupun berkunjung ke area wisata terdekat. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan selama tiga bulan, dimulai bulan Juni s.d Agustus 2023 dan meliputi tahapan; 1) Persiapan, 2) Pelaksanaan Kegiatan; pelaksanaan program ini melibatkan kerjasama dua dosen dari kampus yang berbeda, 2) mahasiswa, dan sekolah mitra (SD Negeri Empan), 3) Evaluasi dilakukan melalui praktek berbicara dan berinteraksi dengan teman di depan kelas. Luaran yang diperoleh dari pelaksanaan PKM Pentiapan Generasi Global melalui Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris siswa SD Negeri Empan terdiri dari dua luaran, yaitu luaran wajib dan luaran tambahan. Keluaran wajibnya adalah publikasi di jurnal ilmiah terakreditasi, dan luaran tambahannya adalah meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi bahasa Inggris dasar siswa SD Negeri Empan.
