Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the ability of the students on translating English text into Indonesian and to identify the types of students' grammatical errors in translating English text into Indonesian. In this study, the authors used a qualitative approach. The research instrument that the authors used is a written test. Each student is instructed to translate the English text into Indonesian. The steps that the authors took are analyzing the data, classifying errors based on the type of error, reconstructing the correct form of the error, and calculating the percentage. The research method that is used to analyze college student errors is the qualitative description method. After analyzing the students’ translations, the result is “Add a word” error (14.86%) is the highest error, “to infinitive” and “Possessive pronoun” is the lowest errors (0.31%).

Abstract

The textbook is one of the materials in teaching learning process which is regularly used by both teachers and students at school. Textbooks should improve the quality of teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study is to find whether or not the materials provided in the English textbook “Interactive English” designed for the eight grade of Junior high school compatible with the curriculum 2013. In this research, besides book, the researcher also used data sheets, internet and information. To facilitate students in developing their reading ability, the textbook provides five types of reading questions, namely multiple choice question, matching question, essay question, short answer question, and completion items very good category. These types of questions measure how much students understand from the reading texts. In collecting data, the researcher used documentation study by the following steps, as follows; 1) list the suggested criteria for evaluating textbook. 2) list the criteria of reading exercise suggested 3) read the English student book entitled Interactive English., 4) find out the reading exercises provided in the textbook, 5) classify them based on the criteria of reading exercise suggested by Na’ima Mosa Ali. The data is analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used the steps of analyzing data as stated by The data collected for this study will be gathered from the English textbook “Interactive English” published by Yudhistira. By using this book, the students can understand the materials easily. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Buku teks merupakan salah satu bahan dalam proses belajar mengajar yang sering digunakan baik oleh guru maupun siswa di sekolah. Buku teks harus meningkatkan kualitas proses belajar mengajar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah materi yang disediakan dalam buku teks bahasa Inggris “Interactive English” yang dirancang untuk kelas delapan SMP sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013. Dalam penelitian ini, selain buku, peneliti juga menggunakan lembar data. , internet dan informasi. Untuk memudahkan siswa dalam mengembangkan kemampuan membaca, buku teks menyediakan lima jenis soal bacaan, yaitu soal pilihan ganda, soal menjodohkan, soal esai, soal isian singkat, dan soal penyelesaian soal kategori sangat baik. Jenis pertanyaan ini mengukur seberapa banyak pemahaman siswa dari teks bacaan. Selain itu, peneliti harus memahami tentang evaluasi materi terutama dalam latihan. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan studi dokumentasi. Proses pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan langkah-langkah sebagai berikut; 1) daftar kriteria yang disarankan untuk mengevaluasi buku teks. 2) menyebutkan kriteria latihan membaca yang disarankan oleh Na'ima Mosa Ali, 3) membaca buku siswa bahasa Inggris berjudul Interactive English., 4) mengetahui latihan membaca yang tersedia di buku teks, 5) mengklasifikasikannya berdasarkan kriteria bacaan latihan disarankan oleh Na'ima Mosa Ali. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Peneliti menggunakan langkah-langkah analisis data seperti yang dikemukakan oleh Spreadley. Data yang dikumpulkan untuk penelitian ini akan dikumpulkan dari buku teks Bahasa Inggris “Interactive English” yang diterbitkan oleh Yudhistira. Abstract

Even though English has become the most preferred language to learn in Indonesia, learners often face difficulties in learning it. These difficulties are often caused by the teacher's role because being a teacher of English as a foreign language is certainly not an easy thing. Therefore, to avoid these difficulties, this article aims to evaluate what makes a good English teacher a foreign language. In this article, the background is the researcher's experience when he became an English teacher at the Unity School High School (SMA), which is located in Central Park, Grand Galaxy City, Jaka Setia, Kec. South Bekasi, Bekasi City, West Java. The researcher has been teaching English for several years at this international school where the students have high motivation in learning English. Researchers took a sample of 30 students. Researchers used the observation method in the data collection process and applied qualitative methods in the data analysis process. The approach method used for students was an introspective method, namely self-evaluation of the difficulties faced by students. The results showed that the students might face some difficulties in learning English caused by the teacher himself, such as irrelevant material, lack of creativity, and lack of emphasis on active communication. Teachers who didn’t pay attention to the individual needs of students, don't motivate them, and don't involve them in learning can also be a problem. The solution was to adopt a teaching approach that is more diverse, adaptive and responsive, and focuses on real communicative situations to improve students' English skills. Some of the teaching methods used by the teacher may not suit the conditions of the students and need to be changed. In conclusion, this research emphasizes that becoming a proficient English teacher involves more than just mastering the language itself; teachers must also have additional attributes to be effective in conveying knowledge to students. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Meskipun Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa yang paling disukai untuk dipelajari di Indonesia, para pembelajar sering menghadapi kesulitan dalam mempelajarinya. Kesulitan-kesulitan tersebut sering kali disebabkan oleh peran guru itu sendiri karena menjadi seorang guru Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing tentu bukanlah hal yang mudah. Oleh karena itu, untuk menghindari timbulnya kesulitan-kesulitan tersebut, artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi apa yang membuat seorang guru Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing yang baik. Dalam artikel ini, melatarbelakangi pada pengalaman peneliti pada saat menjadi guru Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) Unity School, yang berlokasi di Central Park, Grand Galaxy City, Jaka Setia, Kec. Bekasi Selatan, Kota Bekasi, Jawa Barat. Peneliti telah mengajar Bahasa Inggris selama beberapa tahun di sekolah internasional tersebut yang di mana siswa-siswanya mempunyai motivasi tinggi dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Peneliti mengambil sample sebanyak 30 siswa. Peneliti menggunakan metode observasi dalam proses pengumpulan data dan menerapkan metode kualitatif dalam proses analisis data. Metode pendekatan yang digunakan kepada siswa adalah metode introspektif, yaitu self-evaluasi terhadap kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh para siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa para siswa mungkin menghadapi beberapa kesulitan dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris yang disebabkan oleh guru itu sendiri, seperti materi yang tidak relevan, kurangnya kreativitas, dan kurangnya penekanan pada komunikasi aktif. Guru yang tidak memperhatikan kebutuhan individu siswa, tidak memotivasi mereka, dan tidak mengikutsertakan mereka dalam pembelajaran juga dapat menjadi masalah. Solusinya adalah mengadopsi pendekatan pengajaran yang lebih beragam, adaptif dan responsif, serta fokus pada situasi komunikatif nyata untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris siswa. Beberapa metode pengajaran yang digunakan oleh guru mungkin tidak cocok dengan kondisi para siswa dan perlu diubah. Sebagai kesimpulan, penelitian ini menekankan bahwa menjadi seorang guru Bahasa Inggris yang mahir melibatkan lebih dari sekadar menguasai bahasa itu sendiri; guru juga harus memiliki atribut tambahan untuk efektif dalam menyampaikan pengetahuan kepada para siswa.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the process, advantages, and disadvantages of implementing Graphic Organizers (GO) in teaching reading. This study is of a descriptive qualitative nature and was conducted in the English Teaching Department of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Sidoarjo. Class PBI 2021 was selected as the sample using the purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through observation and interview methods. Data analysis involved the steps of data classification, interpretation, and conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the application of GO consists of three steps: pre-reading, while reading, and post-reading. The advantages include making reading instruction more effective, fostering cooperative learning environments, enhancing students' confidence and motivation in reading classes, and promoting an active and engaging classroom atmosphere. However, some disadvantages were noted, such as the strategy's limited applicability to certain texts and the potential for increased noise levels in the classroom. It is recommended for lecturers to incorporate this strategy into their reading instruction.

Abstract

In the method of Foreign Language Teaching, Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP) is used to teach language structures (grammar). The presentation phase is controlled by the lecturer by asking students to make presentations in groups. During the practice phase, learners practice speaking or writing the language structure correctly. Practice activities include drills, multiple-choice exercises, gap-fill exercises, and cue exercises. In this phase, the lecturer's role is to provide positive feedback to students, correct mistakes, and model the correct forms. In the production phase, learners have fully mastered the form and have learned how to produce oral and written texts. This research aims to develop a grammar teaching strategy in Collaborative Learning by employing PPP and some alternative techniques for fourth-semester students in the English Department at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Sidoarjo. The study employs action research with two cycles. The research findings show an improvement in students' average grammar scores, from 46.22 in the preliminary study to 71 in the first cycle and 81 in the second cycle. Furthermore, the results of the study indicate that students were enthusiastic and active in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan dan menekankan pemanfaatan kontroversi akademik terstruktur sebagai model teknik pembelajaran kooperatif bagi mahasiswa universitas. Meskipun pentingnya berpikir kritis dan pembelajaran kooperatif dalam pendidikan tinggi semakin meningkat, kurangnya teknik yang efektif menghambat perkembangan keterampilan penting ini. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menunjukkan efektivitas kontroversi akademik terstruktur dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir kritis dan mempromosikan pembelajaran kolaboratif di kalangan mahasiswa universitas yang mempelajari bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL). Melalui tinjauan komprehensif terhadap literatur yang ada dan studi kasus, penelitian ini menyoroti implementasi sukses kontroversi akademik terstruktur dalam beragam pengaturan kelas EFL, menampilkan adaptabilitas dan efektivitasnya dalam memfasilitasi pembelajaran kooperatif dan keterampilan berpikir kritis di antara mahasiswa.Temuan menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan mahasiswa untuk menganalisis secara kritis isu-isu kompleks, mengembangkan pandangan yang nuansat, dan berinteraksi secara konstruktif dengan sudut pandang yang berlawanan, mengindikasikan potensi kontroversi akademik terstruktur dalam menciptakan lingkungan pembelajaran yang kokoh. Sebagai kesimpulan, integrasi sistematis kontroversi akademik terstruktur dalam lingkungan pembelajaran EFL dapat secara signifikan berkontribusi pada pengembangan keterampilan berpikir kritis dan mempromosikan suasana pendidikan yang kolaboratif dan intelektual yang merangsang.

Abstract

The complexity of the 21st century demands an active, interactive, and immersive approach to education. Madrasah Tsanawiyah Nurul Huda Sedati (MTs Nuhati) strongly desires to facilitate such a learning process. To support this mission, we held a two-day training session for applying interactive digital narrative (IDN) media for multimodal, affective, and interactive learning at MTs Nuhati. The first day of the training session provided teachers with skills to design an educational IDN as an MS PowerPoint presentation, while the second day was a simulation of the in-class implementation of the teachers’ presentations. To support the teachers’s comprehension, we delivered a tutorial on educational IDNs based on their literature and also provided an interactive narrative design form, an interactive and narrative MS PowerPoint template, and an example of the template’s application to deliver a specific lesson. Quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative data from a discussion and our observation prove that the training session has been successful, not only in building skills for creating and implementing educational INDs but also in motivating the teachers to keep learning about educational technology.
