Abstract

This study compares the vocabulary used by Indonesian fourth-grade students in their free writing with that taught in their English language textbooks to assist language teachers in developing relevant learning materials for young learners. To achieve this, the researchers employed the corpus linguistic method and analyzed the writings of 369 students from 19 public elementary schools in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, along with five selected English textbooks. The University of Adelaide Text Analysis Tool program, AdTAT, was used to analyze the corpus. The program generated word lists consisting of the top 100 words most frequently used by students and the top 100 words used in English textbooks. The findings of the study revealed a 45% match between the top 100 words most frequently used by students and the top 100 words used in English textbooks. This suggests that there is a significant overlap between the vocabulary used in free writing and that taught in textbooks. The implication of this study is that language teachers need to recognize the basic words students acquire before learning new vocabulary to achieve successful learning of the target language. The study suggests that language teachers should incorporate more culturally relevant vocabulary into their teaching materials to better engage and motivate their students. The findings of this study can also assist language curriculum developers in designing more effective and culturally relevant teaching materials for young learners.

Abstract

The integration of technology in education, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, has become increasingly important in providing students with effective and engaging language learning experiences. However, traditional teaching methods have long been criticized for their inability to engage students and promote active participation in the learning process. Thus, this study explored the impact of Slido, an interactive platform, on classroom engagement and learning outcomes in an ESP course. The research design employed mixed methods, including a questionnaire to collect data from ESP students. The findings indicated that Slido technology influenced students' perceptions of classroom engagement, motivation, and satisfaction. The interactive features of Slido, such as quizzes, polls, and surveys, fostered immediate feedback and increased student engagement. ESP teachers were encouraged to incorporate interactive technology like Slido to enhance student learning experiences, while students were encouraged to actively participate in such activities. Further research was recommended to investigate the long-term effectiveness of Slido technology, as well as its impact on ESP teachers' practices and professional development. Overall, Slido technology shows the potential in transforming ESP classrooms into interactive and engaging learning environments. It has the potential to revolutionize language learning and provide students with practical language skills for real-world contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the use of Jamboard as a tool for revolutionizing self-introduction among English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students in the digital age. It examines ESP students' attitudes towards the use of Jamboard in enhancing their self-introduction skills through a mixed-method approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to 131 ESP students. The study found that the respondents have a high perception of Jamboard's usefulness, ease of use, appearance, and interaction towards their self-introduction, with a mean score of 3.8. The technology was found to be user-friendly, easy to use, and helpful in presenting ideas and showcasing creativity. However, some students also encountered difficulties with Jamboard's usability and features. The recommendations include providing support and training for the effective use of digital tools like Jamboard and incorporating user-friendly features. These implications can inform educators and developers in promoting student engagement, creativity, and collaborative learning. Further research can explore the impact of Jamboard on student learning outcomes and their perceptions and use of digital tools in the classroom.

Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in education has grown in popularity, especially in online assessments. This research evaluates the effectiveness of an AI-based online testing platform, Classtime.com, in teaching tenses in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The study uses a mixed-methods approach, collecting data from 246 Economic Sharia Law students who took the midterm exam during the 2022-2023 school year. The results show that the average score on the exam was 88.21, indicating a high overall performance. Females scored higher and more consistently than males. The study suggests that Classtime.com's AI-based testing is an effective tool for teaching tenses in ESP assessment, providing immediate feedback and personalized learning experiences. However, the study's focus on one language subject limits its generalizability to other subjects. Nevertheless, the use of AI-based online testing in ESP assessment can improve language learning outcomes and contribute to effective teaching practices. Future research should explore the use of AI-based online testing platforms in other language subjects, investigate factors influencing student performance, and examine long-term effects on language learning outcomes and attitudes toward language education and assessment.
