Abstract

Learning a target language is actually a process of trial and error, whether as the first, the second or even foreign language. This study is aimed to find out the mistakes within the descriptive texts. The method used in this study was a qualitative approach, and the design was discourse analysis. The data were taken from the 27 descriptive texts written by the fourth semester students of English Department, while the technique of analysis was based on the error analysis theory, involved: collection of a sample, identification, description and explanation. The generic structure result showed that the students could write well in the identification and aspect part, but not in conclusion part. In case of lexicogrammatical features, the use of verbs caused the most number of mistakes, or 132 mistakes (30.07%), while the fewest ones was the use of adjective, found only 4 times (0.91%) of the total mistakes. Generally, the students used the lexicogrammatical features in their writing, even though still need to be improved. The causes of students’ mistakes were mostly due to the interlingual aspect.

Abstract

This research was aimed at describing and explaining the interpersonal meaning, types of mood system, and modality found in the thesis abstracts. The method used was descriptive qualitative and specifically designed as discourse analysis. The data were taken from two abstracts, written by undergraduate students, majoring in English Language Education atdifferent colleges in Ponorogo, East Java. They were non-native of English. Units of analysis were clauses, words, and phrases. The data were analyzed by using interpersonal meaning theory, proposed by Halliday. The result of this research reveals that firstly, the interpersonal meaning of the abstracts is realized through wordings of the clauses based on the mood system (subject and finite), while the residue is realized through the element of predicator, complement, and adjunct. Secondly, the mood types found are mostly declarative, and only a few of them are interrogative. The declarative form is characterized by order of subject followed by finite, while the interrogative form is characterized by the use of question word, instead of the order of finite and subject. Thirdly, in terms of modality, the abstracts dominantly display the use of low degree modality (can, could, may) which signals the writer’s intention to weaken the authority toward the readers.

Abstract

Language learning is basically a process of trial and error. It means that in every language learning activity, both in oral and written, errors in language are made. It also happens to Indonesian learners of English. This study is aimed at investigating the organization of lexicogrammatical feature in recount texts, written by sixth semester students of English Language Education Department, STKIP PGRI Ponorogo, in the academic year 215/2016. The study used descriptive qualitative method and designed as error analysis. The data were collected through written test composition. The result of study showed that the organization of lexicogrammatical feature was less satisfying. It could be seen from a number of mistakes produced by the students. In detail, there were 32 mistakes in using wrong word (misuse), 30 mistakes of wrong tense, 25 mistakes in using action verb, 21 mistakes in using finite, 17 mistakes in adverbial use, 17 mistakes of misspelling, 3 mistakes of using conjunction, 2 mistakes of using srticle, and 2 mistakes of using adjective.
